Hi,

I saw in a Norwegian newspaper that Hitachi is planning to launch a 1tb harddrive for laptops this year! Wow!! That would be sweet!

http://www.dagbladet.no/dinside/2007/01/05/487914.html

The link is in Norwegian but I hope it is good anyways!

Peace!

It's not for laptops it is for desktops.

Laptop hard drives are just now getting up past 200 GB. It will be a long time before we see TB hard drives for laptops. We will have probably already done away with mechanical hard drives by then.

Actually it says "corresponding disk for laptops" - that could refer to their 7200 RPM 200Gb disk announced for 1st half of 2007. Corresponding can mean many things - it's reasonable to assume that similar technology for a 2.5" disk will yield much less space.

Wow..1TB for laptops would be awesome....if they do ever come out with one. The most I've known for laptops is 400 Gb. 2x200Gb hard drives.

Aren't 300GB Laptop drives coming out in the 2nd half of 07? I thought I read something about when searching for Hybrid and SSD's.

Here is a rough translation done through an online service.

kilroy, what translator site did you use?
I just googled norwegian to english translator, and picked one. Can't remember exactly what one it was.

Translation done quickly by me, hopefully a little(!) better than the automated thing above.

20 years ago we could buy computers with 20 megabytes hard drives. Since then, the storage capacity has expanded a lot, and soon we will get to see the first 3,5" terabyte hard drive.

A terabyte is a thousand billion bytes, or a million megabytes.

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is launching a disk for desktop computers in the first quarter, following up with a corresponding drive for laptops and digital video cameras.

Deskstar 7K1000 is the name of the drive, and it's priced at 399 dollars in the US, or about 40 cents per gigabyte, according to News.com.

We will probably also see terabyte drives from several competing brands this year.

The capacity of a terabyte can be compared with storing 250.000 mp3s, given a typical mp3 is about four megabytes.

so 1tb for laptops is soon a reality?
Considering the biggest laptop drive out now is only 160gig, while the biggest 3.5"er out NOW is 750gig, by the time we have a 1tb laptop drive, we'll also have a 5 terabyte 3.5"er!!! Now there's a raid array worth building!!!!

I wouldn't hold your breath. IMO, I don't believe we will see tb hard drives for laptops for at least 2-3 years.

Right, that's the 200Gb 4200rpm drive.

The more interesting drives are the 200Gb 7200rpm drives, to be released by hitachi within 1st half of 2007.
