This is awesome, an external graphics/media solution that uses the Express Card slot.

Although the 7900GS will be somewhat limited by the Express Card bandwidth of 5gb/s.

Depends on what you are doing, but I think crippled is a better term to use considering that the 7900GS bandwidth is 32gb/s.

call it what you will, but a 9x improvement in framerates when you're gaming and total mobility when you're not is still pretty impressive in my book.

My thoughts exactly.

This should prove intresting for the thin and light market. But if I understand the concept, the card will probally be a 7900GS MXM module, and use the express slot's PCI-E lanes to comunicate just like any other card. This is very very interesting. If Asus can pull this off and make it priced decently, damn hats off to them.

Its a great idea, its a bit like the Nvidia Quadro Plex but in a smaller form,I hope this idea catches on and is developed further, such as models being able to use desktop cards with power being supplied externally, and faster interfaces that can cope with the bandwidth of faster cards.
With the current DX10 cards having such huge power draws this would seem like the answer to people who like gaming with notebooks.

Maybe with notebooks outselling desktops 2-1 we are finally going to see some lateral thinking on the upgrading scene.

No, it will be a desktop 7900GS and it will be upgradeable. Edit* Supposedly now it will only be able to power an external display with the 7900GS not the noteoboks main display.

Yeah, I dont think it was ever implied that it would power the notebook's main display. Think about it this way, when you plugged in an Audigy 2 to your notebook it didnt make your notebook's speakers better it only made external speakers better.

The whole purpose of the station is to let your notebook be portable when our out and at the same time allow that same "portable" notebook become a monster when your at home. The station allows you to have a better graphics and audio solution by giving you a gfx card that gives you 9x better performance when your connected to an external display, and an audio chip that I asume will atleast be audigy quality when you plug it into external speakers. Oh and if I'm not mistaken it allows you to connect a keyboard and mouse into it's USB ports.

Basically this thing is one of the most powerful docks for a notebook PERIOD.

but thats the problem its still a dock...

I don't understand...how is that a problem? The entire purpose of this device is to serve as a dock/base that will make your laptop better in terms of graphics and audio at home. A laptop that's like a hummingbird on the go but a dragon when back at home. That is unheard of since, as you know, other docks only expand I/O ports. This is only an assumption, but i guess you guys want some sort of device that once plugged in will automatically upgrade the graphics/audio inside the laptop and add additional USB ports externally? I'm sorry but I don't think there is even a device like that for the desktop market let alone for the notebook market. One device that adds an upgrade in terms of graphics and audio internally and adds usb ports outside for a laptop? I'd guess something like that could go for $2000/$3000. Alright this is what I'm talking about baby. W5 series lappy connected to the XG + LCD

Sneak a bechmark so we can gague how bad the Express slot bandwidth will bottleneck the card

according to cnet the xg station will be around $599 with a 7900 gs, i know its too early to say but, do you think they will come out with anything more "midrange" or maybe something like an external with a pci port by itself and you just get your own gpu and put it in, that would be cool. still awaiting further developments.
