Sager 5760 touchpad and mic problems...

Hi all...

I got the 5760 for Christmas and I love it but I'm having some issues.

1) The touchpad works, but I can't configure the drivers. Everything is greyed out. Have uninstalled and reinstalled several times and Sager tech support hasn't been able to help me (told me to try various drivers to no avail). Anyone have this problem? I use a Logitech MX510 but I still want to have a completely working touchpad.

2) Realtek HD Audio mic input volume is looooow. I have to practically scream for anyone to hear me. All volume settings are high and mic boost is enabled. I've googled this issue and it seems to be pretty common but no real fixes. I even tried the latest drivers from Realtek's site. Having the laptop as a gaming laptop, this is pretty vital in online games.

3) Screen is great but seems a bit dim. I've toyed with the nvidia control panel settings forever but I can never get it to look as bright as my girlfriend's old Toshiba laptop.

If anyone has any fixes, I would greatly appreciate it. I love the laptop, but I'm not 100% completely satisified due to issues 1 and 2 above (issue 3 I can live with).

For as much as my family spent on it, I want to be completely satisified. I'm sure you all can agree with that. I'm thinking of returning it if I can't get these things fixed and maybe try to get a Dell XPS or something with comparable hardware.

Don't get me wrong, other than these issues, I love the laptop. It's played FEAR, Oblivion, and Battlefield 2142 without any problems (all settings on max detail and 1600x1200, Core 2 Duo T7600, 2gb ram, nvidia 7950 GTX 512mb).

TIA!

*bump*

Does anyone else have this problem?

1. Can you take a screenshot of your touchpad configuration page(s)? Very strange that it won't let you configure anything. Also, check your hardware profile and see what version of driver the touchpad is using. Perhaps the Sager driver didn't install properly and it is using an MS driver.

3. Have you fiddled with the screen brightness control hotkey? (Fn + one of your F keys I am assuming)

Since I don't have your specific model laptop, I don't have much to offer about #2.

1) Okay, I'll take some screenshots and post later this afternoon. I have to run to work now. Oh, I have the 5760.

3) I did. Before the screen brightness would "reset" upon booting up (not restarting). Now it seems to be staying on the brightness level I set it to.

Thanks!

1) Okay, here are a few screenshots... http://www.joylab.com/stuff/ ... no idea why this is. It seems that the touchpad systray app disappears after a while too lol I've had to reinstall the drivers a few times because of that.

2) Well I found a fix for this, though it's not software related. Just on a whim I bought the Logitech Premium Notebook Headset which is great because it has the analog connections (mic jack and headphone jack) but also a usb converter. I decided to try the usb converter and it works like a champ. When you plug in the headset, it changes the default input and output to the Logitech headset and returns the default input/output to Realtek when you unplug it. I plugged it in and ran through the Windows mic test and it's working fine.

I picked up the headset at Circuit City for $60, but it has a $30 mail-in rebate. It also comes with a hard plastic carrying case. I haven't used them much, but they seem pretty comfortable. Hope this helps.

3) Seems to be working fine after restarts and bootups.

TIA!

I have yet to see a respectable driver for the Elantech touchpad on any of the M57** models. Most people i know either uninstall the driver and use the generic Win XP driver or they install the Synaptics touchpad drivers.

Hmmm, okay. Pretty odd that they would put such a crappy device in a great laptop. Sager tech support already had me try the Synaptics driver but I guess I'll give it another shot. When all else failed, they suggested I do a clean install of Windows (formatting, etc) and install just the video drivers and Elantech drivers. Thanks, but it's not worth a reinstall lol

Thanks, xrchris!

I have the same problem. Ev'thing's greyed out and there are no options for altering anything. Annoying since mine is set to super-sensitive; all I have to do is look at the thing and the cursor flies across the screen

Your touchpad mouse pointer is set to super sensitive? That's funny cuz mine barely moves anywhere lol I ended up just attaching a mouse so I'm pretty much using a mouse at all times now. Much better!

I have a few questions.

1. Does the generic WinXP drivers work? i.e. Can you modify the setting in the control panel if you uninstall the touchpad drivers?

2. Do you have the logitech drivers installed for your mouse? If so have you tried uninstalling those to see if your touchpad drivers work?

My unit won't arrive till the 15th, just go the tracking number yesterday. Once I get it, I'll let you know how I fair at it.

They do, but you don't get to configure anything other than the standard mouse options (pointer speed, double click speed, etc).

Yes, but that was after I had installed the Elantech drivers. They didn't work even though they were installed before the Logitech drivers.

Definitely let us know if it works for you and what you did to get them to work. Did you get your laptop with XP pre-installed or blank so you can install XP yourself?

Thanks!

I'm using a Logitech MX500 w/ Bluetooth (and love it). Didn't install the drivers- the pre-loaded BT bit picked it up just fine (and I've no need for all the extra buttons- L, R, Scroll, Forward & Back are fine w/ me).

Altho' I use the MX500 99% of the time, I hate when I'm typing and the touchpad throws my focus into another area; typing in the middle of other words is annoying. Been busy w/ other things, so haven't fussed with it much to see what can be done about it.

Press Fn+F1 to disable/enable the touchpad. This comes in handy big time. I hand the same problem. My had would hit the touchpad whenever I typed, moving the pointer around. However, when you disable the touchpad, it also disables the volume control buttons, but I found this nifty little program called VoluMouse that lets you control the volume using your mousewheel depending where the pointer is located. For example, you can set the app to control the volume when the mouse is over the Windows Start bar.

If you need to change the volume while in a game or something, just press Fn+F1 to enable the touchpad/volume controls and then Fn+F1 again after you adjust the volume.

Hope this helps!

To get the sidescroll on the touchpad to work download drivers from here:

Touchpad drivers.

Uninstall all your previous touchpad drivers and install those. I think they require a reboot but once you are up and running, you will be able to use the side scroll panel.

Awesome, I'll try these out in a couple of hours in when I get home. I have no problem uninstalling the Elantech drivers since they don't do any good anyway.

I'll post an update after I get it installed and try it out for a bit.

Thanks!

YES. It looks like those Synaptic drivers worked! Thanks!
I was excited at first, but the Synaptics drivers (8.3.4) did nothing for me. Touchpad doesn't work at all, now.

Uninstalled Elantech (5.0.1.9), rebooted, installed Synaptics, rebooted. Nothing. Rinse, Repeat. Nothing.

So, for the time being, I'm running entirely on my MX900 (not necessarily a bad thing, but it'd be nice to have the touchpad for the times when the MX is charging).

Seeing as it won't let me edit my last post, I have to post another.

Last night, turned on the 5760 and a Elantech screen popped up telling me the drivers were installed (uh... a little late, maybe?) Version shows to be Synaptics 8.3.4 and now the scroll up-down, L-R both work. However, in the Properties, everything is still grayed-out. No chance of me setting the speed down any (altho' it does feel a bit better than previously, at least).

Not sure if this happens with all touchpad drivers, but the Synaptics driver seems to get disabled when in sleep mode, but it won't get re-enabled. You have to reboot to get it back.
