Compaq 2800 Battery or Charging issue

I have a Compaq 2800 in the family that ran for years on AC charger WITHOUT battery installed (to keep it from slowly going bad on AC).

The other day, we juiced up the battery for a few hours (since we installed wireless access), used it for an hour on battery power, booted back up with AC, charged the battery (now indicates 100%) and now system will not boot with battery only.

And the system dies immediately if AC removed with battery installed.

I suspect a bad battery or a bad charging circuit.

Perhaps keeping the battery on the shelf the last 3 years was not a good idea after all??

Ideas anyone? thanks!

Otherwise, the notebook works fine off AC.

Based on what I've been reading over the last few days on this site and others, the charging/battery cutover circuits in these compaq notebooks are poorly designed or using poor quality components and eventually just crap out after a few years.

The battery should behave as if it is still brand new.

Take it from an old battery sales engineer, batteries WILL discharge on the shelf. Batteries are electro-chemical devices and chemistry is active all of the time. Plates will deteriate as the active material in the plates change and if left to that condition without recharging, within a reasonable period, will stay in that condition. No active material, no battery voltage or current. Could explain your failure to power the computer when removing AC. I am basically against running a laptop without a battery because the battery provides a valuable filtering device to insure that the voltage has minimal ripple on it. Desktops have room for filtering capcitors but laptops don't have much room and the battery provides this valuable function as well as providing power.
