lol yeah that's pretty funny

Blu-Ray does have the added benefit of another technology backing that up, the ROM Mark. Basically, it prevents bootleg discs from being made, because of protection on the physical level of the discs. And the Mandatory Managed Copy makes it less necesasry to circumvent things to make archival copies for backup (making consumers happier)

I don't understand the big controversy on price. If you're looking simply for a gaming system...the Xbox 360 is cheaper. But, by the time you add the wireless adapter and the HD-DVD add-on, the price is comparable to the PS3.

I've had the 360 for quite some time, so most of my console gaming is on that system. Since I liked the HD-DVD add-on so much, I went ahead and purchased the PS3 primarily as a Blu-ray player. It's one of the cheapest ones out there for now (soon, I think to change with recent CES announcements). I doubt the HD vs BR debate is going to be resolved for at least a couple of years, so wanted to have access to both formats (hey, I still use my laserdisc player)...

(Currently watching Black Hawk Down on the PS3 in Blu-ray at 1080p ... defintely worth the cost)

I saw the trailer in 720p on a PS3 and it looked pretty wicked.

every store around here has PS3's in, though i have only seen one 40 gig model and that was xmas eve at target, i was staring at it for like half an hour before i finally went and got what i needed and left... lol...

Ill get the 60gig version around my birthday in march, by then all the kinks should be worked out and some good titles, i hope NCAA Football comes out soon for it.

Comparing Wii and ps3 sales is fair, especially since they were released on almost the same day. Nintendo did a much better manufacturing job and hit the release date dead on. sony delayed, delayed and delayed even more, then released with very little manufacturing. that's a little less than brilliant..
Plus there are ps3's sitting on shelves and nobody is buying them while the Wii has people waiting in line still and not everyone in line gets one. They also leave the store without buying a ps3 that's still sitting on the shelf

Nintendo was much more organized, but remember that Sony has created a completely new system, while the Wii is based heavily on the GameCube, only with a different case and a totally redesigned human interface. Nintendo's strategy was much more cost-effective and outside-of-the-box thinking, which is why they win and Sony loses.

Also, they're not quite in the same catagory. The PS3 is an uber-gaming-and-graphic machine and Blu-Ray player; the Wii doesn't pretend to be nearly as advanced. Its like comparing a PSP to a Gameboy.

And I would have seriously considered buying a Wii if they had just kept the "Revolution" name.

The Wii name lends itself to so many uses.. Like Wiiconomics. I used that one not too long ago when I was comparing the Wii launch with the ps3
makes a nice user title too

Same. I still might pick one up sometime later this year for some SSB:B and Mario Kart.

Here's my take.

Nintendo released with more...about 2.5 mil....and sold them all. Now they are out, so that's what the out of stock is about.
PS3's released with less, about 600k, and sold them all. Now they are bakc in stock...probably to the tune of far greater than 2.5 million. So yes, lots are 'sitting' on the shelves, but alot are still getting bought. Don't kid yourself into thinking that most of them aren't finding homes at a pretty good clip.

Until both are in stock, and readily available, I'd wait to say which will show it's true colors. I'll stick with my prediction that by the time that happens (both are in stock everywhere) then PS3 will have some new titles out and will be far more successful. However, a price drop would be nice.

Well said. the PS3 is a great system but it will be much better with some kick a$$ games!

Maybe where I live is strange or something, but here the ps3 is everywhere and they just sit on the shelves. A lot of stores even have signs up advertising they're in stock, but nobody cares.

That's huge, I don't know if this is still true, but when I was in college a marketing professor I had told us that porn vhs had a larger distribution than main stream movies.
I only know what the article said, but I'm guessing the blue ray group didn't like hearing that.. It will be a huge boon to HD DVD if it's true though, that's for sure
post #56 of 1614
I doubt the adult film market has quite the influence it used to when it comes to picking a format. Think about it: since the age of VHS and Betamax, the porn industry has gravitated towards the internet, while Hollywood films now make the most profit from DVD sales.

pretty hard to find a definitive article on the web, but sales are somewhere between $500 million and $12 billion, depending on which article you read..
Probably nowhere near what regular DVD sales are, but still nothing to sneeze at..

I'm sure that Wooster is right on this, the internet was probably the biggest boon to the p0rn industry ever.

Some jerk who was working the Wii "kiosk" gave me a hard time because I was looking in the settings area instead of playing the game. The freakin remote was off by like 10 degrees! Jerk...

Anytime I get that I just stump them with a technical question, they climb back in their hole after that.
