Thread Starter
This just happened recently. My LCD screen on my 5680 just sort of went out...Its black but i can barely see the screen if i look hard enough, like its not bright enough. I cranked up the brightness, doesnt do anything. I cant use my laptop unless its hooked up to my monitor. When i switch over i know all the settings are back to normal to use for my laptop screen now it looks like its off. anyone have any suggestions or ideas PLEASE inform me. Thx

Is there any light coming from the screen? If not, then it sounds like your LCD backlight burnt out.

Same problem with an old laptop. I can only see the display with a bright light in front of it.

I don't know if the problem is the inverter or the backlitght. I need a repair for mine. If you know anything new, let us know.

As CClyph said - the flouro tube or power inverter that powers the flouro have gone bye-bye.

Could be a loose wire or connector but either way RMA Sager dude .

I've had my 5680 for 1 year and 3 months, right before the warranty ended in January 05 I sent it back for cracks in the lid. They fix it no problem but now occationaly and infrequently the screen backlight (I think) cuts out. I've hooked up the notebook to a 2nd monitor and do get a picture and some how through messing with the video settings the LCD cames back on.

Now I was just surfing the net and BAM! no light, but I could see the windows still because I have a bright light behind me. Tried all the Fn + F7, F8, F9 hot key nothing. Then I shut the lid and opened it back up and it worked.....

I can't remember right now where the connections are @ for the back light, I'll have to double check the Repair Manual. Does anyone has any input on this problem? What do you guys think bad connection, flouro tube?, or power inverter?

Any help would be great guys thiis forum kicks a$$!

I had that very same problem with my 5660 about 4 months ago. So I removed the front lcd cover (the screws are under the little rubber pad thingies). There is a connector for the lcd backlight that in my comp, sits along the bottom just right of center. I unplugged the connector, and plugged it back in and vola! The screen came back on. My comp gets bounced around alot and it must have come loose. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking...

I have a similar problem, but slightly different. My 5680 occasionally starts up with a black screen (I can hear windows startup music play). The backlight is working because I can see it on at the bottom, and I am able to adjust the brightness level. This is an intermitant problem. I've left it alone for a few minutes and the screen just comes on like nothing ever happened. Has anybody had this happen before? Anyone got any idea how to remedy this problem? Could it be a loose cable in the LCD? Can I fix it without voiding the warranty?

knk.johnson do you see the startup text during power on self test (POST)?
Or is the screen totally blank from power up?

If you can see the POST screen then the LCD goes blank you might have a windows problem. One suggestion if this is the case is to start windows in safe mode, it might help diagnose the problem.

If you can't see the POST screen try entering the BIOS (not sure what Fn key it is on the 5680). If you can see the BIOS screens then again it points to a windows issue.

If you can't even see POST or BIOS screens then a call to Sager might be in order.

At power on (when this problem occurs) I will get a black screen and no POST. The backlight is ON at the bottom. After a brief period (POST startup period) the backlight will go off for just a second and then back on. This is in keeping with a normal startup just before Windows starts up. After the backlight comes back on I hear the Windows start music and that is that. As far as I can tell, Windows is up and running but my screen is blank except for the backlight which is on. If I wait ten minutes or so (not a given time) the monitor comes on as if nothing happened. I haven't tested to see if this time interval works every time, but maybe I should. I already called Sager and they want me to go through the warranty company. They say it might be a stuck switch at the LCD hinge area, but not sure. Now I can't find my warranty papers, which the warranty company is asking for before doing any service. Isn't that nice. You would think they would keep a computer record of such stuff, huh. I am wondering if I can open the LCD myself and check the switch/ cable possibilities. Will this void the warranty?

normally the lid switch turns off both the lcd and the backlight.
If the lcd is off but the backlight on it is not the lid switch.

Unusual problem. You would normally expect the LCD to fail totally ie. never come back on. The fact that it eventually comes on is different. It does imply that the problem is not with the LCD itself but something on the mobo. It might require a mobo replacement.

Not sure about opening the case with warranty issues, particularly the extended one. Unless Sager authorises you to open the case yourself I would not.

I guess I'm going to have to send the laptop back. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that. I expect it to take them quite a long time to fix it and get it back to me, and I use the computer for my work too. Thanks for your input. I will leave the LCD cover alone for now.
