Pentium 4 Mobile in the 9100?

Hey guys,

what are the odds of getting a Pentium 4 mobile (not pentium-m) cpu into one of these 9100s? I know it will fit and run, but it will run at the lowest clock speed by default.

Has anyone messed with this before? I have a 2.8ghz prescott right now. I figure that if i could get a P4-m that is running at least 2.6ghz, the extended battery life would be worth the slight loss in performance.

Anyone try it yet?

When I had my 9100, I specifically remember the poor battery life. But then again, you went into buying that laptop with the knowledge that it was a desktop replacement, not a mobile machine.

Either way, if I recall correctly, the Prescott does offer significant performance gains over any non-Prescott (and newer P4) processor. So I'd keep the Prescott. Besides, it's not worth the upgrade now.

I thought that the northwoods were actually faster up to 3.4Ghz and also used less power and generated less heat.

I found that a utility called RightMark CPU Clock will modulate the cpu frequency. I am not sure if you need some sort of motherboard support for it though.

I might be willing to take a stab at it.

I did purchase the 9100 for a desktop replacement.

Then I upgraded to the mr9800. Then I unlocked it to 12 pipes. Then I got another gig of ram... you can probably see the natural progression

I've seen Mobile Pentium 4's at 3.2Ghz with HT. I might just purchase one of those. They go pretty cheap on ebay!

Northwoods are faster! not to mention they generate less heat. P4m's did not come up to 3.2Ghz they stopped making anything past... 2.8ghz was it? and definetly not HT capable.

They changed the name to Mobile Pentium 4.

They go up past 3ghz.

They are Software clockable now! The multipliers are unlocked!

Sweet!

This means i can get a FASTER p4m and get better battery life and less heat. Awesome!

I'll let you guys know and do a write up when/if i can afford it.

Only problem is that the FSB speeds only go to 533mhz instead of the 800mhz that we enjoy now.
