Hi my Sister bought this very limited notebook without consulting me. How best to set it up?
She bought it with minimum specs (1x512mb ram) If you open more than about 2 windows it totally struggles....

This is the UK model

This link leads to the specs page:

Thanks,

What you mean by "set it up"? You mean upgrade wise, or how to place it on a desk?

No i should say optimize. I am going to get another 512mb of ram, but other than that, i just want to get the best out of it. it is very very slow, i couldn't use it. i don't know whether the system comes with a lot of bloatware, or whether it would normally be this unimaginably slow.

any help would be welcome.

i am putting on less power greedy applications than norton internet security for example and defragging the harddrive.

other than that i don't know what else, is the ram all being used by windows? Probably at least 256mb right? So that doesn't leave much for other applications.

Thanks RD

If the machine does include bloatware (am unfamiliar with what's included in systems sent to the UK), it can slow to a crawl. Most folks with new Dells do a clean install right away, and that normally helps a lot. Replacing Norton and adding more RAM should also help speed the system.

I recently reformatted and reinstalled Windows on an old eMachines desktop. There was more bloatware in that system than any in Dell I've ever seen, and I had to manually rid the machine of the junk, a PITA. The differelnce in speed before/after was amazing. If you're not able to do a clean install (I wasn't - no Windows disc), be sure and clean the Registry of all the remnants of the junk you remove.

Just realised it has 256mb of ram. No wonder it struggles. I am getting another 256mb for about £12 so that should do as a min spec. 512mb sticks cost over £50 and that seems a bit steep...
