Please can someone shed some light on my situation

I have the above notebook and recently the DVD/CD drive GCA/GWA4040N has stopped reading CD's.
I have tried updating firmware and using a laser cleaning CD but this has not rectified the problem.

The DVD reading/writing still appears to be working fine.

I have decided to replace this drive but am having trouble as each time I contact a supplier they ask me to check with the manufacturer for compatability.

I have tried calling Fujitsu support dept but they are not interested in helping, I have registered x2 with the Fujitsu support forum but thier moderators are yet to confirm my registration, first time 2months ago!

I have removed the original drive and the plastic chassis in which it fixed and there is an adaptor plug screwed into the back of the drive so that it mates up to laptop.

Does this mean that I can use any 12.7mm drive in this laptop?

All the photos of drives in the net look exactly the same as the OEM unit. and yet I am consistantly being told by Fujitsu and local computer shops that NO there are many variations and it is very brand specific.

Is this a load of bollocks?

It is all very frustrating as I fail to see that the manufactures of these drives would not use an international standard, it would be self defeating to thier potential profits.

I am looking at using a Pioneer DVR-K06 dual layer drive, anybody had good/bad experiences with this drive?
