Partitions on a new dell e1505

Thread Starter
I just got my first dell e1505 laptop today and of course even though i checked the "no preinstalled software box" i got a crapload of it on there. So i went to just go ahead and reformat and reinstall the operating system but when I went to the "delete partitions" screen there were 4 there already.

My question is, are any of the 4 partitions actually needed for a dell to run right?

The partitions are:
-: Partition1 [Fat] 47mb
c: Partiton2 [NTFS] 69461mb
f: Partiton4 [MediaDirect] 2047mb
e: Partition3 [fat32] 4754mb

I know that C: (windows) and F: (mediadirect) can go, but i have no idea what are on the 2 unnamed partitions " -, e" and/or if they are safe to remove.

thanks for any insight.

part 1 is the diagnostics partition.
part 3 is the recovery partition.

I was going to ask pretty the same question right now... hopefully I found this topic. Well... Does usually Dell owner's remove everything less the MediaDirect??

Because I'm using a e1705 (80GB), but I just saw like 4GB "waste" in some far partition, take a look:

EDIT: Could someone tell me which are those partitions beyond the C and D? (c: and d: came from DELL in this way)

Thx

I deleted all of the partitions and reformated the hard drive leaving 1.5 gig unformatted( for media direct). Media Direct will use the unformatted area. But before you do this make sure dell sends you all the discs like I did. Dell didn't ship Media Direct and PowerDvd with the system. you won't be able to play any Dvd's wothout PowerDvd installed. I also had them sent me all the other discs like Sonic Dvd. You will need these to do a complete reinstall. My available hard drive space went from 79 gig to 108 gig on the 120 gig drive.

Just to let everyone know. .. . i spoke with a dell technician and that they said you could delete all the partitions without causing any trouble .... 1 is for the recovery, and the other is for helping to install its bloatware and stuff and then the other is mediadirect.

Also ... my laptop came with over 7 cd's included in the box . . . the windows mce, sonic, and all that stuff - i didnt ask for any of it but it was there. sweet for me.

Just leave 1.5-2.0 gig of unformagtted space. Media direct will know what to do with it automatically.
