I need advice re: my broken macbook pro!

Hi all. I'm relatively new to these forums (been reading them for several years, but never really posted).

In August, I bought a 2.0 ghz macbook pro. I've upgraded it, so it has a 120gb HD and 1.5 gb RAM installed. About a month ago, a recliner chair brushed against the casing (back side of LCD) and broke my screen. The casing is now dented (nothing major). The LCD itself is broken, but not like any busted LCD I've seen, it basically inverted the whole screen.

I've had apple look at it and it's not under warrent, so it's basically $600 repair for a new screen and assembly. Being a student, I don't have $600 laying around, so I am considering eBaying the thing. I have no idea what I'll get for a working macbook pro 2.0 ghz with a broken LCD screen.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone has any clue what I'd get for the computer as is. I figure if I'm going to have to pay $600 for repairs I might as well just buy a new computer (if I can sell this one).

Any ideas or thoughts would be welcome.

thanks...

I would suggest you look on eBay for the screen and install it yourself

I second this.

if u sell it on ebay, youll be getting a refurb on the apple store probably, if money is an issue.

fix the screen, keep it a while. no need to spend 3x money on a new machine when the one you have just needs fixed. damn recliners!

Thanks guys. I'll look into this store. I think I may opt for buying a 20in + widescreen moniter as well, at least until I get this thing fixed!

seems like you said you didnt have the 600$ to replace the screen. why spend another 200$ on an external monitor, that wont really be used after u get it fixed? unless of course you dont have the 600 now?

to me that 200$ is 1/3 the price to fix the laptop.

I should have mentioned, I'm a design student and can't have much downtime with my computer. I'm using a borrowed LCD moniter right now, but need to return it, so buying a new one would be a temperary solution. And I'd continue using it down the road when I eventually get a desktop as well.

I'll probably opt for buying the replacement screen now though.

Does anyone know where to find good documentation for installing the screen? I've looked all over the place and all I can find is ifixit.com's guide, which is great, but doesn't have any documentation on dissasembling the display casing and installing a new LCD.

thanks again.

not quite clear on what u r asking. any LCD u purchase should be replaceable as a unit. u don't need to pull apart the actual framework of the LCD unit.

yea should be the entire top if im not mistaken. but i think he wants to know 100% what he is doing before he orders it and attempts an install.

i dontknow anything about the lcd removal in a pro, sorry. if you are going to buy an lcd, what route would you go? since your in the market for an LCD for longterm, would you spend a decent amount (300$)? or since your strapped for cash, and want to fix your pro screen asap, would u go cheap? Id probably bite the portability bullet and get a nice external LCD for now. then next get a replacement for the laptop. this way, you get a goood product for further down the road, and dont sacrifice your work time.

the LCDs i linked to are <$300
thats a great price for a replacement.

i was commenting on an external.

300$ can get a damn good LCD these days.

I've seen several 20inch widescreen external LCD's in the neighborhood of $200, I'd probably go with one of those.

I think for now I'll keep borrowing the external LCD I have at the moment and focus on replacing the LCD in my laptop.

YES, money is an issue, but I'll be getting a good tax refund back this year, so I'll be using that money to fix my problem.
