Dell XPS M1210 Review

Processer:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5600 (1.86GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB)
<o>

</o> What more can I say? While not the fastest, it certainly smokes anything I’ve ever used. On XP it was lightning fast; on Ubuntu, its pretty quick also.
<o>

</o> Video Card:<o>
</o>
Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
<o>

</o> Out of the two choices, this is not the best, but it is the cheaper. If you’re not gaming, then this is probably all you’ll need. I’ve played doom 3 a little bit, but it was kind of choppy. If I had it to do over again, I’d spring for the Nvidia.
<o>

</o> Chipset:<o>
</o>
Intel Pro Wireless

No complaints here. The Wifi connects easily in XP, and not so easily in Ubuntu (mainly due to my use of WPA encryption. I really don’t know enough about Linux to troubleshoot it at this point). After changing my router to WEP encryption however, it worked fine.
<o></o>
Memory:<o></o>
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)
<o>

</o> This wasn’t the largest amount of RAM money could buy, but it wasn’t the lowest. So far it doesn’t seem to have affected performance.
<o></o>
Audio:
Integrated Audio
<o>
</o>The absolute bane of my existence; Sigmatel hardware, and Creative software. I’ve had and read about more problems on this segment than any other “out of the box” notebook. Now I’m not a music buff, and I’ve read that the speakers are too tiny. The real problem however, is the software conflicts (both on XP and Ubuntu). The best I could figure it, the software on the Creative CD (pre-installed), was conflicting with the Sigmatel drivers. After reformatting I left the Creative out of installation, and it worked fine- that is until I installed Ubuntu. Initially the speakers were good, then as soon as I plugged in the head phones, there was no sound at all. After some laborious googling, I got the speakers and one (of two) headphone jacks working, but the line in doesn’t function at all (everything still works in XP though).

<st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive</st1:address></st1:street>

It plays movies. No issues.

Build Quality<o></o><o></o>

I really like its sturdiness. It’s a hearty little machine with a lot of power. Some people complain that its too fat, but I guess that’s just personal preference.<o></o>

A tale of two operating systems:<o></o><o></o>

Currently I’m dual booting with Ubuntu and XP. This might actually be necessary with this model due to the protected Media Direct software that comes with the system (it’s a long painful story) The version of XP I selected was Media Center Edition, with an express upgrade to <st1>Vista</st1>. Everything worked out of the box except the audio (which worked, it just kept popping error messages every time I plugged in headphones).<o></o>
Later, I installed Ubuntu, which took a lot more tweaking to function. So much so that it begs the question; why switch? I guess I just heard so many great things about it and I’d hate to miss out just because I’m dumb. <o></o>
Anyways, I’ve managed to get mostly everything working, and I’m pretty happy with it. It runs fast, and Does everything I need.<o></o><o></o>

Pics to follow!

ok, quick question, why didn't you just wait until you were done to post the review?

Sorry everyone, when I look under "reviews" this still doesn't show up. I didn't think anyone else could see it either.

Very weird indeed, and pointless to say the least.

Give the guy a break? Give me a break you, pal. If you are going to write a review, then write the damn review properly, don't waste people's time with pointless information. FYI I've never written any review here, and if I do write one in the future, I'll certainly write information that is worth reading. And that is totally different from the "shit" I've posted in my short time here, because the "shit" I've posted are mostly questions to others more experienced users, which has nothing to do with a review or something that people would be looking to read in the first place. Furthermore, my posts are no more shit than the posts you've posted in your LONG TIME HERE. BTW I've wasted enough time in this thread, and I wont waste any anymore, because unlike your time, mine is precious.

YOU don't decide what is pointless to read for other forum members or myself,whats pointless to you may not be to someone else.
There's plenty of people in these forums who have an interest in linux or whatever,on different notebooks.
While you seem to be having a bit of a boo hoo about what I said to you,spare a thought for the OP,in his first or second post and obviously not familiar with the forum and how to do things,gets slaughtered by a five minute wonder asswipe like you,telling him his review is pointless.

New forum members are good,and reviews are even better,I like to read peoples opinion about their new laptops whatever they use it for,you need to be a little more tolerant of someone who has just joined,has different computer interests or maybe english is not their first language or possibly offer some suggestions on what they should add rather than just slating it,this is a really good way of scaring new members off,but then you, being the Einstein that you are,probably didn't stop to think that a new member might be highly offended and not return.
Thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case and ndrwgn has edited his review for the better,and will hopefully continue to contribute to NBF.

I myself have never done an "official" review also and as such don't consider myself in a position to criticize anybody who goes to the effort of doing so.

I really look forward to your "everything to everyone" review when you do decide to do one,I can feel the shit dribbling out of the sides of my mouth already.

And yeah you have wasted your time in this thread,nothing constructive has come out of it,hopefully you will learn to keep your retarded unnecessary comments to yourself.

By the way,what makes you think my [I average 55 hours a week working] free time isn't precious??

By the way ndrwgn,glad you like your new toy.

Do you have any plans to try other linux types like Gentoo ?
I have been wanting to try Linux for a long time but going by the forums,there still seems to be quite a few compatability problems which is unfortunate,maybe when XP finally dies I will give it a go as I'm not too keen on vista from what I've seen of it yet.

I really don't know anything about Gentoo, as I am also new to linux (although I've always known that deep down I would eventually switch). I've tried Feisty Fawn, and It seems to be much more M1210 friendly. I now believe that what made it so unstable for me was an update to x server, because it happened to my edgy as well. In fact, I am kind of dissapointed that ff is still alpha, because it seems to support notebooks as a whole, a lot better. I guess I'll have to wait until april..

By the way, the google team uses ubuntu, so it can't be too bad!
