problem with m1710 and laCie external HD

Thread Starter
for some reason my Dell XPS m1710 will not boot to windows when i turn the power on with my external drive plugged in; it just shows a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner....the drive is a laCie 40GB USB powered HD...anyone have any suggestions?

You probably have the boot order set to boot from USB before internal HD. Therefore, if USB storage device is connected and on when computer starts it boots to that. Easy fix. Resart the computer and press F2 to enter the BIOS. From here navigate to the screen which has the boot order configuration, and re-order it so that the internal hard drive partition with windows XP on it is at the top. Voila.

if the BIO setting is correct, it should boot from your exteral USB hd.

No, that makes no sense. Even if that was the case, once the system sees that this drive is not bootable, it should then boot from the internal HD. To the OP: Does this happen regardless of what port the drive is plugged into? Can you try booting with a different external drive plugged in? I have seen cases of machines not booting when certain USB devices are plugged in. But those were all quite old systems; this should not happen on a recent machine.

On one of my older desktop computers, if USB is set before HD0 in the boot order, and my external is attached and powered on while booting, my computer will come up with a "No boot device found." message. If I power off the external, or change the boot order to put HD0 before USB, it works fine.

I have that too. If I set usb before internal HD then it just sits there and does not boot, if I have an external usb HD connected.
