No, not quite.
The desktop 9600 & 9700 are very different. With the 9700 being quite a bit better.
The laptop 9600 & 9700 are more similar but not the same. There is more to it then clock speed. They have the same number of pipelines, but the 9700 is slightly more effecient.

Of course I do consider the laptop differences somewhat trivial, and I'm not too bothered that I recently bought the 9600 in my laptop.

If anyone is interested, Arima has (finally!) updated their website, and the detailed pics and specs are up for the W730-K8-DTR....interesting stuff.

And yah i am pretty sure it is a typo.. especially given the 6805 was listed that way as well.
I'm in Westchester...and I go downtown sometimes when I have to go to Columbia...

I haven't paid too much attention to the cameras and computers too much in the store, so that's probably why I overlooked their price increases there. I mostly look at their audio stuff, and you won't believe the kind of low prices they have there. They typically match the ultra-low prices of sound stores in NJ such as SoundCity and 6Ave. Sometimes they are even below the prices of unauthorized internet resellers (even though J&R is authorized). They have high end receivers at 50% the MSRP, speakers 30% below the MSRP. etc. Of course, these are the products that they only sell in stores and not on their website. For example, the Pioneer VSX-49TXi receiver retails at $4500, J&R has it (in-store only) for $2500.

Well i will absolutely keep that in mind when i have to buy non computer stuff.

I got removed from the compusa on 5th cuz the manager said i was scary - when i wasn't even yelling just having a dispute, admittedly belittling him.

I live on the upper east.. so the 86th st cc and bb are a good solution for me.. usually cc rather then bb if i can.. i just prefer that chain.

I'll goto j&r next time i am looking for different consumer electronics. Thanks for the info i had pretty much written them off.

For those of us who are disappointed as I was, I got a rude awakening checking around for some competition. Other than the "off the wall" folks (I'm including IBUYPOWER though some might object) the only thing I can come close in *price* to this laptop is the Sager 5680, which runs $800 more for a better screen and 128 MB 9600 Pro. Then there's the HP 600nc (something like that) which is about as much as the Sager.

This is still a hell of a value.

Yes I would pay $500 more bucks for a 9700 Pro & improved resolution in this exact same chassis. I do think they are missing the boat on a 6811 with these specs. Shall we all email emachines??

Wondering is it possible to just buy directly from Arima? That pic looks so beautiful.

Interesting; like everyone else I was hoping they would edit the specs to say ATI Radeon 9700 128MB memory... .

still it's better then the integrated ram they 1st posted. There is not that much diff between a laptop with a MR9600 & MR9700 (they are much more alike then the desktop parts with similar names)... but would be nice to see one with the latest greatest

According to THIS article

http://news.com.com/2100-1001_3-5184...l?tag=nefd_top

this model is on sale _now_ and also includes an improved paint job. Also in my area, searches reveal Office Depot, CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City. Online searches reveal nothing.
