GeForce Go 8800 news

"Those who are waiting for GeForce Go 8800 series to appear on notebooks are in for disappointment since there are no plans for that. Apparently, 90nm G80 proves too much for a notebook to handle. Therefore only mainstream G84 and value G86 will be available for notebooks, targeted for release in early Q2. Consumers will have to wait till Q3 this year to enjoy high end GeForce 8 series graphics on their notebooks when the die shrink happens."

Sorry if this was posted already

That's what I had thought all along. Oh well, no big deal, by the coming fall we'll probably then have all the really cool technology (hybrid 200GB, 7200rpm hard drives, fast blu-ray/HD-DVD burners, Vista Sideshow auxiliary displays, faster wireless, etc., etc.) in place, and it will be a good time for me to get a new laptop.

Are you kidding?? That really sucks. Is there going to be a successor to the M1710 before the fall then? I can't imagine it with a mainstream GPU

Probabaly a higher clocked 7950 or a higher clocked x1900 who knows.

great news and bad news for me. I want to update for under $2500, now I won't feel so bad when I get a 7950GXT, on the other hand the prices of PC's with the 7950GXT isn't going to drop anytime soon.

psshhh good news for me

I JUST bought my E1705 with the 7900 GS. I don't want it to go outdated so damn fast.

They seriously need to make the G80 mobile part external. Give it a hot plate option for the "professional on the go."

They'd definately have to crank up the speed of the ExpressCard slot, I don't think it's fast enough to handle the current 79xx series never mind an 88xx.

Why even do that, get creative and make an external PCIx16 slot on the laptops, then we would need an external case/heatsink that would have a plug for it, simple as that really. That way, the card could get individual cooling and it would be great for a gamer on the go that could disconnect it for business and reconnect it for hardcore gaming.

What! i can't believe this. Q3 is ages away. I though that they were already testing a geforce 8800 go in laptops. Its usually alienware, dell and sager to use the high end cards anyway, so that means no XPS for another 6-8 months?

Great, so you could game and heat up soup or pot noodles at the same time?

This is not unexpected especially from a financial standpoint from Nvidia. It provides longer life to the 7xxx series.

It also gives DX10 to get stabilized and go through a revision or two.

all and all with vista here it just plain makes sense.

Lastly it gives the rest of laptop technology a chance to play catchup. Santa Rosa is all fine and dandy but without newer hard drive support and other development there would be serious bottlenecks anyway.

Okay, that's one way to look at it, but considering that laptops have more and more been reaching to the level of desktop performance, delaying like this for santa rosa and the 8800 is really bad in that aspect because it's putting them behind. I mean Q3 for the mobile 8800 is almost a year since the desktop 8800 was launched, that's just bad for laptops+gaming.

It's more like a step back rather than improvement.

I'm really hoping this article isn't legit and/or they think of some special cooling for this card and that they have these products out at latest in Q2.

Very good idea Pdonket

So I guess this means that maybe I should pull the trigger on a 1710 now.
