Rumors: Machook "THIN"

Thread Starter
There has a rumor going around that there is a new Apple laptop. It is just named by ppl, the Macbook "Thin". It is said to have a smaller screen (12" from rumors but i dont think so...). What wants me to know MORE about it is that they said you can choose either the ATI X1600 or the Nvidia Geforce 7300. Currently Nvidia's graphic is doing better than ATI so I wonder if anyone knows about this rumor and if it is true? Currently I am planning to get a new macbook pro but I would hold off it if this is true.

i havent heard about this either. they wont put a x1600 in it, the pro would be hurting then big time....

sounds like BS to me.

I've heard about this rumor.

While I have no doubt that Apple is working on something like this, whether or not it is anywhere near being released or will be released at all is the question. I seriously wouldn't bank on it.

Apple gives it's customers what Apple thinks we need not what we think we need. Most of Apple's customers don't need a thin ultra portable, especially not when the MacBooks work just fine for most people.

There has been a lot of speculation on the Apple rumor sites about a 12" PowerBook replacement. I'd absolutely love to see that, but really doubt it could handle the ATI x1600 (which, I believe would be superior to the nVidia 7300).

The main reason I prefer the MacBook over my 12" PB is the brightness of the screen. It's also faster, but that isn't much of an advantage if you're using it primarily for web surfing and email.

Any new machine will have to be pretty damn good to coax me away from this one.

Just as I thought, you are a better person than I am ... I am hanging on to my trusty ol' PowerBook. I do like the MB, but I'll have an easier time giving it to my kids than the 12" PB (already gave my first 15" PB to my brother). It's partially sentimental, I'm sure ... it's such a cute little thing.

At least I don't feel quite so guilty now

i see NO need for a 12" book with a macbook around.

itll never become a reality. its just not neccessary.

Just picked up my 2.33 C2D Macbook Pro today. I would say if Apple was to make an ultra portable they keep the 13.3" screen size.

Just make the laptop really, really thin. Basically it would be like a Macbook Pro, but with a smaller screen and possibly a less powerful dedicated graphics card (the X1600 would just be too hot for a laptop thinner than the MBP).

also first i hear of this rumor, and interestingly enough i actually agree with what kakaze said... i have no doubt apple is *working on it* because after all its a company that is obsessed with "small and cute" designs, but for the time being they won't release it because the market isn't large enough so it wouldn't be profitable for them. and on the technical side, i doubt they'd squeeze the x1600 in there since they had heat problems with the larger macbooks....so perhaps only if they underclock or if its an x1400. the nvidia option though also seems likely whereas Apple never played nice with AMD so i wouldn't be surprised if they were looking to ditch ATi as their graphics supplier in the near future.

Looks interesting though...gonna have to wait and see.

They couldn't stick an X1600 into the MacBook line simply because then the difference between the MBP wouldn't be very significant. It already has the ultrafast Core 2 Duo (albeit at lower speeds), so giving it the X1600 (or any other reasonably good graphics card) would cut into MBP sales badly. Yes the MBP has some other great features (higher res bigger screen, metal case, backlit keyboard) but not enough for a lot of people to justify the extra.

Come on Rob...for once abf wasn't being obnoxious.

Though to be fair, if you want small and cute Apple is nowhere near some Japanese companies. Nothing Apple makes could be classified as kawaii.

You're the mod, Kakaze.
Yeah the Japanese have got some SWEET tiny laptops these days.

I like cute and small ... when it comes to a notebook computer. Why would I prefer a 12" version of the MBP?

1) I don't need a larger display for email and surfing the web

2) The shiny white of my MacBook is okay, but I just happen to like the Aluminum look much better. And, I prefer the MBP keyboard

3) Dedicated graphics would be an advantage, doesn't have to be super powerful. Some games, like Guild Wars work fine on lower end graphics cards. I take the smaller computer when I travel, and it would be nice to have some gaming functionality (but I can make do with the MacBook for now).

But that's just me ... I'm not at all unhappy with the MacBook, and I'll probably accept the fact that I need to go to the 15.4" if I want the MacBook Pro ... but I'll wait a while to see what Apple comes up with. Maybe those Apple design guys will make a huge mistake and come out with that 12" MBP us diehards are waiting for

A 12" widescreen MacBook Pro would be gorgeous!!

Aside from the "cute" remark his post was actually contributing to the conversation and wasn't a cut down for the sake of being a cut down.

woah this thread has alot of post already! um where I heard it...I found the rumor from some mac website (i cant find it again T_T) then I just googled around for "macbook "thin"". I think that this might replace macbook pro judging from the rumored specs...im just as clueless as you guys are. just throwing thoughts out on here ^^

BTW I did a little typo on the thread title...not macHook, but macBook. how do i change it?!
I don't think the 12" version will be out until well after Leopard comes out. It just doesn't make sense for Apple to put out a 12" MBP when the macbook is doing so well.

That being said, if Apple can figure out a way to stick a powerful graphics card into the 12" version and still keep the heat down that would be very impressive.

I have had no heat problems at all with my C2D MBP, but I imagine the video card is underclocked quite a bit.

Thin is in, I just hope they do the MBP 12", not a MB 12". The MBP keyboard backlight rocks.

Also, I hope they use the Sandisk 32gb flashdrive ilo a convention HD. Coupled with Intels new low voltage C2D (1.33 or 1.5) the battery life would rock.

Not to mention wireless "N" cards being available.

they have -0- reason todo a 12" macbook. thats too indifferent from a current product.

the macbook is too good a seller to modify their lineup right now.
