Upgrade or keep?

I'm rapidly approaching the end of my 30-day RMA window and I'm looking for some input on whether to return my 4780 for the 8790.

Pros - upgrade to 3.4 Northwood from 3.2
M11 from M10
802.11g turbo from 802.11b
internal bluetooth from no bluetooth
better looks (subjective, I know, but the silver cover on the 4780 just
looks a little cheesy).

Cons - additional $242 cost
RMA shipping - guess about $80
living without laptop for a few weeks

Biggest cost

Forget to mention the largest cost of all - explaining to my wife why I need to spend additional $300 plus when the system I said would be good enough for me just three weeks ago suddenly no longer is.

Is it worth it?

(tongue firmly in cheek) - do you know how much all that romantic stuff costs?

Seriously, though, your point is well taken Q. So far only complaints about 4780 are the cover (looks plastic and tacky) and the strange behavior with the tv tuner (it only recognized 2 of about 100 plus cable channels on all settings until I ran scan all frequencies - now I get all the channels I should but the numbers don' t match. ABC is channel 7 on cable, but it's now something like 43. It also won't record - got to ask Tom/Laura/Adam about that).

Mother of god, you're lucky (my 30 days is out), I say trade that mofo in for the 8790.

BeachBum has it covered

And I will second that

Agreed. But I am one of those types that always wants the best out there. For me computers are a bad hobby.

Trade! $300 is not a lot for all the additional features, including raid! plus you get a better vid card.

tell her your laptop is incompatible with a certain software, and they have one which is compatible :P

PTR , Keep the machine you have. Take the wife out and you will certainly attain things that will never come with the 8790. That is unless she likes the little blue lights and goes "wild about them".

Having been married for over 33 years, the $300 that you spend for the upgrade will cost you $30,000 of grief for the rest of your life. She won't let it go - Trust me, this will haunt you forever even if she is the "real" angel.

Dual-channel RAM. Dual HDs. RAID. 256mb ATi.

What are you waiting for? Go buy her some roses and start thinkin' up stories.

I have to say, though, that G-Omaha's right. He really is. But you KNOW you want it!

You guys are gonna get the poor man killed, or worse make the wife take away his new toy.
Just order the new one, don't tell her about it, and one day go mission impossible and swap the old one out for the new.

"No honey, that wasn't silver before, it was always that color.

Oh that extra $300 on the credit card statement? Yeah, PC Torque actually charged me $300 LESS than they should have in last month's statement, this is just a correction. No, I don't have last month's statement anymore. Shucks. I love you honey, would you like some chocolate?"

See how easy that is?

Now there's a perfect recipe for disaster.... Doubt that she is that stupod and will only let one get buy with such as lame thing, if she is inclined to buy something that she wants "in revenge". Wouldn't even attempt it if I were you. Bound to fail, etc.....
Yeah and when his wife turns into the grim reaper on him then what? I don't think I could explain away $300 after just spending X amount on the laptop I wasn't going to need to upgrade for the next 3 years. It's up to you man good luck!
OK, PTR here's what I did for ya. I asked my wife would she mind if I upgraded my four month old 8890. You know, the $3000 one I told her would last me for many years to come........ talk about the look of death After I walked to the other side of the room I the explained to her this form. She told me that $300 is not that bad for an upgrade on a notebook; she also let me know that mine was over the 30 day mark. She would like me to tell you this.. TALK TO YOUR WIFE ABOUT IT. You're going to be the one without your lappy for X amount of day. And don't forget, your so called upgrade will be out of date in about six months or whenever pci express or whatever new comes out, (who told her about pci?).

So there you have it, I can't upgrade I mean, talk to your wife about it and tell here how happy this will make you.

Oh ya, my wife told me if I wanted to upgrade around our anniversary let her know and she'll she what she can do. I'm going to get an upgrade, I'm going to get an upgrade

C'mon Gary, I wasn't actually SERIOUS about him doing this, I figured you folks would recognize the tongue-in-cheek nature of my response! I even added a

Ja; But...... If he did, it would have been pure "Hell" after the fact.... Or he could just say... See that's what jpg71 said on the forum.

I totally agree with Mann - Talk with your wife. She might even think that it is a good idea.
I agree w/ Mann, too. Talk to her about it. You might actually be surprised.

And just for the record, I did have a disclaimer at the bottom of my last post, so if he does it w/o consulting her, it wasn't MY fault!

Wow married guys....sigh....Do this, wait until she leaves, goto her closet, remove your balls from the jar she keeps them in, place the firmly back between your legs. When she returns TELL her what you are doing with your laptop and why. Do not ask permission! Return old laptop, order new, and wait for delivery. Once the new lappy has arrived you may then return your balls to her closet, and go vacuum the rugs and help with the dishes

Where have all the cowboys gone??
