Wifi manager for Ubuntu like windows?

Thread Starter
i cannot seem to get any wifi manager to work the same way i can in my Ubuntu install as i can with say windows wifi manager. I just want to be able to connect to all different types of AP's whether encrypted or not. because i go from home that is WEP to school that is not, to work that is WEP and its a real P-I-T-A to manually do each network, i have tried various managers that are available in the download manager and the only ones that seem to "somewhat" work are wifi-radar and wireless assistant. But i still cant get it to just connect the same way it does in windows.

Anyways what do you guys think? Im on my laptop and have an Intel 2200BG card and the newest stable distro of Ubuntu.

Thanks!

i was gonna say wifi-manager because quite frankly, it JUST WORKS and its reasonably simple. i still dont understand what your problem is. you create a few profiles (home, school, etc) and then you just connect to them depending on your location.

you can also try networkmanager but i find it to be a pain in the royal asshole much more so than the default gnome network manager or the wifi-radar program. hell...use Terminal

and WEP is not a problem at all, its WPA that can get a bit tricky

ABF, what is the wifi-manager package called? I'm using network manager, but I hate it because the version i'm using doesn't support static ip addresses. I need to have a static ip when I'm wired and obviously a dynamic ip when I'm wireless.

The only wifi manager that I know of is kwifimanager, but i'd much rather be using a gtk app.

I'm really confused, isn't that the same as network-manager and network-manager-gnome? Do any of these have anything to do with the gnome network manager applet? It'd be a lot easier if all of these things didn't have the same name.

The problem I'm having is if i'm using a static ip neither the network manager applet nor the network monitor applet work properly.
