m5700 overheats during call of duty 2

cod 2 lags about 5 minutes into the game when it gets to about 70 degrees and i have a cooling pad but i guess its not good enough is there anything else better any recomendations?

If your machine is constantly overheating a cooling pad will prolly not really do much more for ya. They are very helpful, don't get me wrong. Use a can of "duster" or compressed air to clean the fan ports and exhaust ports, possibly even remove some of the bottom panels to get more area exposed while using the duster (put them back on before you run the machine!)

I would call tech support and have them walk you through checking the GPU.
Alienware IMO does not have very good luck with applying thermal paste properly or thermal pads for that matter.

When you say 70 degrees, are you talking GPU or CPU? I take it GPU, that is a higher temp, but not to the point of shutdown I wouldn't think. 80+ is when it starts to get bad.

yea im talking about the GPU but when i dont have the cooling pad on, the computer will shut off at about 90 degrees so i guess the CPU is overheating too. I think the cooling pad just isnt strong enough and obviously theres something wrong. but do u know where i could buy that paste? because my warranty is up and i dont feel like spending $40 for tech support.

How much memory do you have? It could be the memory is getting used up, and the pagefile is slowing down the system once your resources are used up.

You shouldn't see a slowdown due to heat at 70 degrees...

You can get Arctic Silver 5 from Newegg.com, it's the best paste out there now. It will work much better than the stock heatpads on the hardware in the 5700.

There are application instructions on their website.

i have 1GB of memory. it seems likes its the overheating because ill press pause a let it cool down for a couple minutes then ill play for about 5 minutes then it just lags again.

I just found out that when i have the laptop plugged in to the wall it lags but when i play on the batteries it WORKS!!! but it gets really hot 80+

It would seem that when you utilize the battery it is possible some of your hardware settings get reduced and cause the machine NOT to overheat, but still yet get hot. I would think that that would be a GPU issue or a CPU issue.

BTW, pausing a game while still running it will generally not do too much for the reduction of heat seems the GPU is still being utilized.

Interesting advice tridge...I would of never thought to give that specific instruction...and oh yeah don't strip out the screws...

First thing I would do if I were you is check the AS5 again. If you have a bubble of air between the cpu/gpu and heatsink, it can give you borderline heat issues. If your cpu is passing 90 deg, I would check that first as that's hot... 70 on the gpu's shouldn't be an issue. Also make sure your fans are working properly.

If it only does this in COD2, I'd make sure the game was patched and reduce settings a bit to see if that takes care of it.

Do you play Oblivion? That game heats up my processor like no other... If you can play that game without heat issues it's probably COD 2...

As others have said, the best advice is you clean up your components and to lower temps, artic silver is best. I remember others claiming a few degress in temp drops. It's best to game on your rig with the plug at all times and U should tweak your lappy's performance settings. for example, my laptop is set to high performance when plugged in! I told it to 100% cpu usage, no suspend or hibernate, hard disk doesn't power down. Fan always on... i think you get the point......
