yeah it's pretty expensive, might as well just get a PS3 =P

Well i just got off the phone w/ technical support..

according to Roy (who refused to give me his extension, which is rather odd since I was always given an extension by other AW employees)...that the new 5790 has a new motherboard and that the 5750 will not support a blu ray drive or the new x1900

even though the x1900 is MXM III and the new Blu Ray drive is just that...an optical drive, so why would a different motherboard be an issue for an optical drive upgrade?

also if it was a different motherboard, then why would the new x1900 go be limited to 256mb of ram? hmmm maybe b/c it's the same motherboard w/ mxm III that is maxed @ 256mb for any given gpu...

So you can conifgure a new 5790 w/ a new nvidia 7600 go, x1800, or x1900...

personally i don't think "Roy" has a clue as to what he's talking about...

ok rant off.
just buy the Blu-ray drive and the x1900 and see if it works :lol
post #8 of 39
Aside from the x1800/x1900/MXM I got everything the 5790 has...
PLUS:
HDMI 1.3
Built in bluetooth
Buit in webcam
expansion port replicator(pimp one)
Dual Lamp LCD
Lightscribe

While I got the 256mb 7600go it comes in 512
and HD-dvd also offered

All for about for several hundred less......... dv9000t CTO read it and weep
And yes this is a sexy laptop!

Why did you say that? This thread is about the m5790, by Alienware, not HP. Its not arguing about what your lappy has, its just talking about the new lappy from Alienware, and that it was released today. And the best part about the m5790 is the x1900 and the OC proc. I personally dont think its really that great of a release from AW, I was hoping for something a little better. Its also a little pricey, for what you get.
Very pricey indeed. It is a special edition release which I think means it isn't going to be available all that long with the introduction of Vista in just a few weeks and also the ability of intel/nvidia sli combination in laptops.

While the price is like a hot ember jumping at your wallet I still have to admit the specs of the 5790 are very appealing. I wonder what I would have done if I were looking for a laptop right now instead of 4 months ago?

archalien, I'm going to change your name to arch-hp now and thanks for sharing =D

and shaz, I already tried to buy the drive and the x1900 =P, but "roy" said that my model doesn't support it...(um...yeah...ok)
And what arch said has what to do with this thread . Killin me.

I'd try back later and get a different cs agent sometime Yang, you never know.
Hey Yang ... I just meant you should buy them from somewhere if Alienware won't sell 'em to you. You'll only be out a $1000 bucks or so, if it doesn't work!

Hey basicvisual ... I ask myself the same question. I like the thinner form of the 5750-5790 ... I mighta gone for it (altho I wouldn't now trade my m9700).

I'm almost tempted to sell my m5750 and wait to buy a m9750 haha...

but then again I might just keep it and wait to build an uber rig =D

oh and I've already looked around for the gpu and drive shaz...but I havn't been able to find any =(
post #15 of 39
I would have been interested in this, if I didnt know about the m9750. I also recently found out I have 8gs coming my way, OH YEAH. Of course, I might have to wait and see if I can find something that supports DX10. We can all dream can't we?

well there will be laptops w/ the new 8xxx series gpu that supports DX10....but it won't be anything like the desktop 8800's

from CES, there was information on some new laptops coming out w/ a 84xx/ 86xx

plus to be able to downsize the power consuming 8800gtx/gtx into a laptop version is going to be hard...unless we see a new mobile 24" laptop work station haha

you might as well build a sff =D
I agree with you Yang, I think the mobile versions of these cards will be watered down quite a bit from the huge power hog desktop versions. They have to be...

For a while there, mobile gpu's were catching up with desktops, but DX10 will move things back.

The 7950go is nothing like the 7950gtx desktop card...

I can't imagine spending a grand anyway to upgrade vid cards in a laptop.

I hear that HH, the pricing for the latest n greatest is seriously getting ridiculous...

by the time the new m9750 comes out, i'm sure DX10 will be out by then, but the 7950 gtx's in sli I'm sure will be plenty for any mobile gamer...

the premium for a fully decked out m9750 I'm sure will be in the 5K ballpark
post #19 of 39
I'm sure the pricing will be high, the only question I have is about the difference in benchmarks. The dual core would be nice, but I wonder if game performance will be that different than the m9700...

Dell underclocks the 7950gtx in the xps line, and I know AW has reworked the m9750 from the m9700 to try to improve cooling to avoid underclocking, but nothing is set in stone yet, they're still testing...

Prices have me a bit put off in desktops also. SLI 8800's is ridiculous, and almost as much as my first complete AW desktop system just for the vid cards...

seriously HH, the way GPU pricing is going...you can almost build an entire complete system w/ the price of a single gpu let alone duel gpu's for sli or xfire
