Worth CPU upgrade

I know that laptops are not as powerful as desktops and that every little helps, but do you guys think is worth upgrading the cpu ?

I have a celeron m 370 currently (1.5ghz) is it worth upgrading to a 380 (1.6ghz) or 390 (1.7ghz)

I will be upgrading this week from 512 to 1.5g of ram, and swapping the 4200 rpm to 7200 rpm hd.

Will that extra 100/200 mhz be noticeable ?

Going form 1.5GHz Celeron to 1.7GHz CPU, you may not notice much, however, you WILL notice a lot going form a 4200RPM to a 7200RPM Notebook HD, also, going from 512MB of Memory to 2GHz of Memory will be a BIG difference, save the extra Money, on the CPU, and go for the 2GHz of Memory & 7200RPM Notebook HD

What laptop? You can probably install a Pentium M CPU in there.

I have a Gateway 6022GZ with a 400mhz front side bus.

Get an Intel Pentium M 735 1.7GHz then, its 400MHz fsb, 2MB cache and has speed step. Will be a much more beneficial upgrade than a faster celeron. I have personally upgraded that laptop to a Pentium M and makes it much faster. You can go up to a 765 (2.1GHz if I remember correctly), but a 735 or 745 1.8Ghz would be the way to go and worth the money.

and are you positive that it's compatible with my laptop ?? 6022gz ?

the dothan 390 and the dothan 735 are the same 1.7ghz... what's the diference between them ?
I upgraded a 6020GZ once, had the slow celery 1.5GHz, got the 725 1.6GHz just for the throttling and the 2MB cache. Even though they are both Dothans, the Pentium M utilizes speed step so it throttles down to 800mhz when not being used with a CPU intensive program and throttles up when you need the power. Because of that it will have better battery life when it throttles down unlike the celeron where it stays at the posted speed even though you don't need it. It also has 2MB cache over the celeron 1MB, so it has better response. If you get the 735, then the extra 200MHz will make a difference, cutting down in processing power like encoding. Even over the celery 390, the Pentium 735 trumps it. The upgraded 6020GZ encoded video faster even though it was only 100Mhz faster.

and you say i can go with the 765 in that lappy/chipset combo.. ?

I'll go ahead and order one now if thats the case

If you can afford it, go for it. Your laptop will be a complete monster with that CPU, more RAM and 7,200RPM hard drive. Only thing that's holding it back is the PC2700 RAM 333MHz. Maybe you can try going 2GB PC3200 DDR400MHz, see if it performs at 400MHz or throttles down to 333MHz.

For reference, same chipset with the 745 cpu:

Don't mind the Pentium 4 M part, it's not a Pentium 4 M.

would I have to upgrade the Bios so it recognizes the cpu ?

I just check pricing and the 745 seems to be the best bang for the $ Around $100 for 1.8 2mbL2

Nope, like I said, I dropped the 725 in there and booted it up. You don't even need thermal paste since the heatsink has a thermal pad already. You can always take out the pad and put in AS5 to drop some temps.

Thanks so much. Hopefully it will get my lappy where I want it.. Going to get most likely a 745. Hopefully i'll be able to tell the diference from the m370 I have right now...
