hi

I Bought Toshiba U205-S5034 About 2 weeks back, i like the laptop small & light.

yesterday i decided to upgrade RAM to 2GB form Installed 1 GB.
I did figure out the Ram Slots are under Keypad & i did remove the Key Board & Spill Resist Cover under the key Board, Only to find out the i have 2 Ram Slots & both have 1 each 512 Ram Installed IT SUCKS. no slots for additional Ram

Now i have to buy two 1 GB ram Sticks to to upgrade my laptop to 2 GB , this is not fair, how come toshiba Advertised the lapstop is upgradable to 2 GB & Not leave any Slot for Additional RAM

please somebody can tell me what i shoud do? As i dont want to Buy 2GB RAM ( 1 gb x 2 Sticks). i dont have that kind of money Either

this is absolutely normal no matter what laptop you purchase. it can upgrade and is perfectly capable of it but like any upgrade it requires the correct parts for it. if you read on toshiba's site you can see the detailed specs of your system which tell you very plainly that you are getting your 1gb as a pair of 512mb sticks, which naturally requires you to replace them in order to do the upgrade. this is not toshibas fault in any way.

Yes, purely a case of you not reading the User Manual or getting info from Toshiba before dashing out and getting your new memory

yes, you are totally correct. my u205-s5044 came with 2gb ram, but is upgradeable to 4gb. in order to do this i'd have to toss out both 1gb sticks and replace them with 2 x 2gb sticks. that doesn't mean it isn't upgradeable, though. ask yourself how badly you need 2gb. if you're only running xp or vista, you can just replace one of the 512mb sticks and have 1.5gb, which should work just fine for xp and vista.

Figure that lower density SODIMMs are always cheaper for the OEM to use, hence why OEMs use them. Plus, at the time of manufacture, high density SODIMMs may not even be plentiful on the market anyway.

It all comes down to a cost issue for the OEM--not a convenience issue for the consumer.

hi thanks for reply,

just so you know that this is my @nd toshiba Laptop, my previous laptop came with 256MB of Ram Upgradable to 512 MB, I did Upgrade that Laptop to 512 MB since it had Additional Slot for Additional RAM, & when i Bought this Laptopi was thinking the same that there will be Additional Slots for Upgrade, which is not the case with this Laptop

& me not reading the Spacs online, I could not find Anything on Toshiba Website that says it will come with 512MB X 2 Sticks heres the link for the model Specs http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/...O&poid=352297.

so please show me the Link which says it will come with 512X 2 Sticks = 1 GB ram OR Please Stop Flemming me

Thanks

As mentioned, here is what it said in the detailed specs for your model in the support section:

Memory5

Configured with 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 SDRAM (both memory
slots may be occupied)
• 256MB (Min)/2048MB (Max), with 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB
PC4200 DDR2 memory modules.

Which would mean, there is a 512MB in each slot to give you a total of 1024MB installed.

its spelled out on the main page as well as here:

http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/cont...U205-S5034.pdf

the lesson here is that you should never assume anything when buying a laptop, its a good thing to work with because you wouldnt believe the number of issues that could be solved just by that. im not here to flame you just to say that you need to not assume and jump to the judgement that toshiba was trying to screw you in some way by not providing extra slots above what they did with the machine. it is still very upgradeable just not exactly as you thought it would be.

Amen to that... Very clearly! Upgradeable... My Qosmio F15 was having two sticks of 256 mb in the specs and ask the Best Buy to upgrade it to 1.0 GB (2x512MB) before I paid for it, because it is upgradeable to 2.0 GB.

Heya

How hard is it to remove the keypad and everything to access the memory slots? I'm in the process of upgrading my own u205-s5034 to act as my portable music studio (already bought a 7200RPM HD with power saving modes disabled) and I would like to double its ram... I'm used to HP laptops with memory accessible from the underside of the laptop, not under the keypad hehe

Thanks,

Squirsier

It's very simple, 4 screws to remove. First pry off the black strip above the keyboard, it just snaps off. Then remove the 2 exposed screws, and the keyboard comes off. Fold back the keyboard (no need to disconnect it) and remove the 2 screws on the large metal plate on the right. There's your RAM!

Awesome, thank you very much, now to see if I have 2 slots or 1 slot occupied... With my HP laptop I was lucky, I had only 1... hehe

Thanks again

Just make sure that what you are taking out of the HP is the same type and speed as what is used in the Toshiba ie: PC4200 DDR2 SDRAM

PC2-5300 / DDR2 will also work

Hey!! I work at Best Buy and what you said goes for any laptop model I know it sucks. Theoretically you can upgrade from 1gb to 2 gb. Most laptops use two 512 sticks because of Dual Channel memory. It seems to do better. Laptop companies expect the customer to be stupid and think the customer will never mess with what is inside do to voiding warranty's and other issues. I WOULD upgrade from the standard, and as mentioned..Sell it on Ebay or to a friend with 512 memory
