When will Dell stop offering Windows XP on new systems?

I'm in the market for a new machine soon, but I would like to get one before Windows XP is phased out (so I'll have the choice of running XP or the Vista upgrade). Any ideas on when all new machines will be Vista only?

Thanks.

January 30th, that will be the end of XP sold on their machines. The day of release they will stop offering XP permanently. Get one fast.

if he gets one before january 30, doesnt it mean he will get XP and plus vista as a free upgrade
as opposed to just vista after jan 30

that is correct.

is this with dell only or with other manufacturers also?

i cant get a laptop before jan 30, and i dont want to use vista as my main OS..i would like to keep using XP for at least half a year..
does it mean i am out of luck if i dont buy before jan 30

I would imagine you are going to get the choice during the building process. For example now you can choose from XP MCE or XP Pro, why wouldn't they still give you some sort of choice when Vista comes out?

You are incorrect pdonket. Historically Dell has kept legacy OSes available for purchase long after Microsoft's latest and greatest has been out. I'd probably say home systems won't have XP as an option after April, but Business and Enterprise will have XP as a purchase option for the next couple years. I've had customers with Win2k COAs on their systems that were purchased as late as 2004. I was able to have Windows 98SE installed on my Inspiron 5000e and I purchased it months after Win2000 and Me came out (I couldn't afford to upgrade to 2k and went with the devil I know when it came down to Me vs 98.

It's funny that this question has been asked. Just yesterday I was configuring a 1710 and I wanted the XP Home OS. Obviously, there is no option for XP home so I got on chat with a Dell CSR. She told me that there was no way for them to configure the 1710 with Windows XP Home. She went on to say how much better Media Center edition is ... blah... blah blah and I told her I doidn't want Media Center. She told me that there was nothing that she could do for me. So, I am not sure whether or not she was having a bad day and just didn't want to bother with my request or they are no longer selling the 1710 with XP Home anymore.

I've got a copy of Home I'd trade for MCE.

MCE is technically better than Home in every way so im not sure why you wouldnt not want MCE over home?

Me too, not that anyone would want to...

I do have an extra Dell XP SP2 Disk I would trade for MCE tho'.... It's the only one I dont have....

XP MCE is essentially Windows XP Pro with the Media Center added. The only real difference is that MCE cannot join a domain, which I'm sure wont matter to 90% of people on here.

SO MCE is better than Home !

To be honest with everyone, I only had a chance to work with MCE for about 10 days before I returned my laptop. I probably just needed to get used to the interface I guess.

Dell will have both XP and Vista as choices, which versions on each is uncertain.
They will bear same cost.

You sure? At CES07 they were talking about immediately on launch, basically every Tier 1 company is dropping XP and putting vista into every single machine. Of course they may offer both, but I hadn't heard anything about that.

I'm less certain about the home side of things than I am the Business side. Dell very well could drop XP on January 30th from the H/HO section. However, I highly doubt Dell's willing to piss off their Government/Education/business customers by forcing Vista on them when their IT departments don't want it. Again I'm just going off of what has been done in the past and what my customers have done/are doing.

I agree with MrEvil..

Jan 30th for Home/Home Office.. and slowly phase out XP for EPP and Dell Business...

You'll still find XP loaded systems on 'sale' at CompUSSR, BB, CC, Staples etc with Vista Upgrade coupons till March 2007 ....
