When will Dell stop offering Windows XP on new systems? - Page 2

will dell load vista ultimate on its present notebook models or they will just introduce new models preloaded with vista ultimate?

toshiba has already announced the release of vista-loaded notebooks and some are loaded with vista ultimate! see http://laptopmag.com/News/Notebooks/...ee-upgrade.htm

www.dell.ca now has Vista on all of their notebooks and although I only looked through a few models (XPS1710, 6400, etc), XP was NOT available at all.

VISTA ONLY!

What did someone say above?

Upgrades can only work once?

If I go and buy a Vista disk from the store, can I use it to install it on my computer, my laptop and my Mom's computer or will it somehow consider that pirating?

BDS28: When you purchase an upgrade copy of Vista at retail it allows you to install that upgrade on only ONE computer you CANNOT install it on multiple machines. It's been that way since Windows 95, though it was nigh impossible for Microsoft to know that you were doing that.

If you're buying a Notebook now and DON'T want Vista, Precision and Latitude are still shipping with XP like I figured they would. Inspirons no matter what division you purchase them from are still Vista only.

Really? I've used Windows CDs to install on lots of computers...

How does it know if you have already installed it on one computer?

It's called WIndows product activation. It was introduced with Windows XP and is supposedly better in Vista. Basically the OS generates an installation ID based upon the hardware configuration in your system (no actual config info is sent to microsoft) It sends that install ID to Microsoft and keys your OS to the hardware in your system. Change a bunch of it and you'll have to reactivate. Windows 2000 and older never had such activation and thus were easily installed on multiple machines without Microsoft's knowledge (even though it was still against the EULA to install on more than one PC). Mind you it is illegal weather you can do it or not.

Does the same thing apply even if you buy a full version and not the upgrade?

Further more, what if you change a lot of your hardware over time... New mobo, no video card, etc, etc...

What if you just like to format and reinstall a lot?

Of course.

If you change too much of your hardware, then your system will be considered a new machine, and activation will fail. In that case you'll have to call Microsoft. Past experience indicates that they handle such cases quite generously, within reason...

Doesn't matter. You can reinstall on identical hardware as often as you like.
Go here for more information. All of this has been asked and answered uncounted times for years now, since the days MS has introcuced product activation for XP and Office.

Microsoft is being way too harsh with the product activation thing. In my opinion if you want to people to stop pirating lower the price of the software.

BTW, if you guys are considering a new laptop or desktop.. call Customer Care at Dell and ask them to ship the system with XP [if you don't want Vista right now] and they will do it.. You'll still be entitled to your Express Vista Upgrade till end of march 2007!
