dell inspiron 1501

Thread Starter
Can anyone help me about purchasing dell inspiron 1501:
AMD Turion 64 DualCore 1.8
15.4" WideXGA 1200 x 800
ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 256MB
512MB DDR2
120GB SATA
Will I be able to run Windows Vista Home Premium edition + aero aplications, If i upgrade on 1024 MB of RAM or higher?
Thanx in advance

The graphics chipset you're getting won't be able to handle aero easily, even though dell recommends 256 MB of video RAM for Vista, in this case "XPress 1150" is so weak, it doesn't do 256 of dedicated RAM justice. The upgrade to 1GB of system RAM will help, but what you're getting is a budget computer by XP's standards. Vista will run slowly on that computer unless you disable aero. The dual core is a big bonus, but think about getting more RAM than just 1GB (try seeing if sticking with 512 MB of RAM during assembly and then popping in 2GB of RAM purchased elsewhere is cheaper than letting Dell do it), and also more advanced graphics.

Philip, you are very very misinformed, and you should do some research before spreading the wrong information.

Aero glass on vista will run absolutely flawless with his graphic chip. It has been proven true over and over and over again. As a matter of fact, even a lowly intel gma 950 runs aero perfectly. And considering that the xpress1150 is a much more powerful gpu, theres no doubt it will run aero just fine.

I didn't say it was absolutely necessary that he upgrade. GMA 950 is no chump compared to the likes of 1150 either. The 950 beats the 1150 in 3DMark 05 and 06. My emphasis was on the memory.

Idk where you got those numbers from, but the xpress1100 series blows away the gma950. Plus, memory size is for resolution. For regular xga/wxga desktop 64mb is more than enough. If you're running sxga type res or more, then 128 is needed.

Well, I guess you could say 1100 series beats the GMA 950 in 3DMark 03 and 01. By a little and a landslide respectively. I'm also not making this up.

I'm not talking about a random scores in a benchmark. I'm talking about actual gaming performance discussed by people when comparing the two. Everyone knows that 3dmark0x numbers mean very little in terms of real world performance.

They're not that disreputable. They do reflect the demands of concurrent games at the time the benchmark is being made

Ok I'm not gonna sit here and argue with you over this. You can believe what you want, I don't really care.

All I'm saying in this thread is that recent integrated gpus handle the full vista aero glass flawlessly.

benchmarks mean nothing when it comes to aero in vista. Aero can be run even on the weakest of intregrated video cards because they don;'t need to render much to perform well. In gaming conditions, that can change since it requires a lot of processing power to render an object.

1GB memory should be fine

Let me settle this, I have this dell, and I am running vista with aero as i type this, and it runs extremely smoothly. I have opened more than 30 windows and still have not seen any slowdowns with aero

THat's good to hear..
i have a question for you...does the AMD dell laptop makes loud blower noises?

I have this ASUS notbook for 2 years running on AMD 64 Athlon and the fan blows hard...i mean the performance is great but the fan is loud...i don't want that noise when i buy a new notebook...

i see that you have one...is it quiet?

THanks!
