Dell M1210 vs my Toshiba and maybe the Dell E1705

First off, thanks in advance for any input. Well like the title says, I am considering a new laptop. I currently have a Toshiba Satellite A75 w/ P4 3.2HT, 1gb pc2700, 4600 rpm 80gb, and a user shared Ati Radeon 9000 upto 128 shared.

Its old and slow, but still gets the job done. Now for the competition

Dell XPS m1210, with Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83ghz/2mb/667, with nvidia 7400go w/256 TC, 64 ded(192 shared), 1gb DDR2/667

or

Dell Inspiron E1705 with Intel Core Duo 1.73/2mb/533, with nvidia go 7900 gs (w/256 ded), 1gb DDR2/667

My questions are as follows: Which is the better gamer, and by how much are we talking here, is that 7900 going to make a HUGE difference when compared to the 7400? And with either system, will there be a night and day difference over my current setup.

The size difference isnt an issue and the prices are roughly the same, so as far as performance, how big of a differnce is there?

Thanks again.

The E7105 will blow away the M1210 at everything. They are different machines. If want to game get the E1705, if you want portability get the M1210. I have both. They serve different uses for me. They both do it well.
They do not compare at anything.

The difference...It's like a Nissan Sentra going against an Infinity Skyline.
The E1705 will blow away the the M1210 on the VGA side. As far as doing processor and memory work, the M1210 will beat the 1705. According to the specs listed above. The front bus makes the difference. However, you can always change the processor, but not the vga.

I have decided to go with the M1210 because a 17 incher is just too much computer to lug around. Hell my toshiba is 15.4 and it seems too big. So now that I have made my decision. Do you think there will be a night and day difference between the m1210 and my current toshiba setup?

Most def. Dual core will let you multi-task more efficiently. The video and the vga are a lot better/faster than your toshiba rig. I would advise to go with 2 gigs or ram. Buy it from an online retailer like newegg or zipzoomfly. They will charge you about 1/3 of the dell cost for the ram upgrade.

robfactory, mostlaptops come with maximum number of slots, dont they

so if somebody ordered 1gb of ram (so they can add 1gb later) it would come as 2x512mb and take up all the ram slots

i hate when they do it
Dell does it. if u get 1gb, they put 2x 512

actually dell's been a bit more fair on their ram prices epsecially if you go for 533mhz ram

for xps laptops you're going to pay 5-10% more than newegg, but you won't have to go through the hassle of changing the ram if you have to send it in to dell

the inspiron line is actually 5-10% cheaper than newegg (again if you go with 533mhz ram, you can't tell the difference between 533mhz ram and 667)

It depends. Sometimes dell will give you the option of ordering 1 stick.
They will charge extra most times.

As far as getting a 533 or 667. It will make a difference depending on the combination of things.
It depends on your HDD too.
However, when video is sucking up 192 of your ram, any assistance in speed helps.

I was looking at their site right now and they do not offer the 1 stick.
However, someone said that dell charges 10-15% more?
$225 for 2 gigs. However, 2 x1gigs 667 g.skills cost about $195 on newegg.
That's a bit like 12%.
Get the the 1gig (2x512mb) from dell.
Go to newegg and buy 2gigs. Then sell the 1(2x512mb) on eBay or here.
As far as removing the ram. It's not that bad. Furthermore, Dell doesn't care if you upgrade the ram.
And it's not that hard to upgrade/remove.
However, it's up to you. If you want you can get everything from Dell.

omg i was 2% off when you choose the cheapest ram at newegg!!!

dell cares if you take out their ram and put some other brand in there, that is when you send it in for repair

There's no need to get defensive guy. I wasn't being picky about your percentage skills. I just happened to look at it.
Either way, I've sent laptops to dell and I've never heard them have an issue with me installing my own memory. As long as you tell them in advance there shouldnt be an issue. Unless the issue is RAM based.

they took out the coupon forum for some reason, i guess they weren't getting enough traffic for the sponsors, the dell section has a sticky with the coupons

that's a nice laptop, but

i would have opted for 2gigs of ram @ 533mhz

i think dell is going to give you two 512 sodimms, so you're going to have to buy 2 sodimms anyways

also the soundblaster is a waste, since it's software
