Hey, I got a problem with a friends Acer laptop, he gave it to me before he left on a trip its an Acer Aspire 1690 Widescreen, it works but the light behind the LCD screen has gone, i wanted to know if there was a way to determine whether the backlight has gone or the inverter has gone.

You can see the screen and the text but its very dark as if there is no light behind it. The information i gave you prob aint much help, if there is anything i can do just say. Thanks in advance.

try using the fn + f6 key... and also fn + the left and right arrow keys.

I tried that and it did not chance it, because i could still slightly just slightly see the text but with not much colour nor light I would assume that its the backlight, or can this happen when the LCD goes to?

didnt u say that its bright at some points but then goes dark again once u are in your OS? if its EVER proper, even for a second, then the backlight is not busted and either the LCD, and most prolly is a software issue

however, if it never gets bright, under any circumstances, then id say the backlight is fried and its time to send it in, for warranty (or paid) service.

Have you tried booting into Safemode, just to be sure it's not a driver issue?

Still the same problem when bootin in safemode and the light never flickers its always dark so should i replace the inverter board? because i believe thats where the issue could be from what i have read. Also tried adjusting brightness. Thanks for your help once again.

{EDIT} Would it be the inverter or the backlight, im still new to all of this so im grateful for any information you can share

well, it can be a lot of things now that we eliminate pretty much 100% a software issue. as far as i know, it could be any and/or all of these:

1) backlight control cable - sometimes this can fluctuate (not probable, since yours does NOT flicker - but still possible)

2) yes, it could just be a failed CCFL backlight tube (this doesnt require a new display. or a new inverter.. if thats the case its relatively GOOD news - you could even do it yourself with a lot of trouble)

3) CCFL tubes actually have better life expectancy than an inverter, so most techs will try replacing the inverter before fooling around with removing the backlight. if your inverter is not pushing enough voltage, it may need to be changed and that could be difficult - sometimes they have to take apart most of the machine to change it/them

so, thats what i found in my research. i hope it helps somehow. good luck and keep us posted.

There are some great threads and photo-tutes in the eMachines/Gateway forum of fixing or replacing inverter and snugging down the cable. ( I had an eMachines M6809)- the loose cable rubbing from opening the lid, thus causing screen flicker is a known issue in the M68xx eMachines, so some brave hardware hackers show some great step-by-step tutes there on how to remedy. One guy named Eunix did some remarkable rebuilding on his Gateway, I think.

Keep in mind that those laptops are built different from Acers, nonetheless it should give you an idea of what you'd be up against if you were to DiY. I'm not as familiar with the Acer groups yet to know if there's similar tutes here or not, nor am I recommending you to DiY.

Once again i appreciate the help i have opened up the case, its pretty simple to check out thankfully, the inverter board was plugged in correctly as well as the cables in the back of the lcd (just making sure). Im planning on ordering in a inverter board today and see if that fixes the problem, im lucky enough to work with some laptop repairs and i have a spare LCD 15.4" screen thats the same as the one in my laptop, now if the inverter board didn't work would it be advisable to take the globe from the working LCD and put it into the other LCD? Now at first I thought that I should just take the LCD's and swap them but the spare LCD was from a sony viao and that could cause issues... once again thanks for your help.

So I should have the inverter later next week. lets hope it works, I want a new laptop for uni :P.

Regards Matt,

Just an update, i called the center and have ordered the piece, it should arive in a week or less, so fingers crossed, it also turns out that the company does not sell the globes and that you would have to replace the whole LCD which would cost 431.51 excl gst. Does anyone know if different lights from different LCD models (i.e. a samsung and hyundai) but still the same type of LCD (15.4" gloss) would work in the other LCD? It crossed my mind once although perhaps they are set to different voltages so that its harder for those like myself to switch pieces around and get themselves a working LCD, and the company makes a buck outa me instead.

Once again appreciate the help.

Regards,

Matt.

dear matt.great u ordered your inverter...!!

new lcd is pricey wow... im not sure about the voltages for blacklights on diff lcd models, i would assume there is some sort of standard but i think you need to verify this first with a multimeter. seriously eh?

very interesting questions.. i wonder if there is any issues, with using a diff lcd with a diff backlight, and if the dimensions and spacing in the unit would suffice. PLEASE continue this thread this is really good to see you getting this done and being so gung ho about it. rock on!

Alright i waited like a week and the part finaly came in, but to my disappointment the inverter board didn't work. So later on today during my luch break im gonna do some research into the globe for the LCD, I had already rung Acer regarding the globe and they said they dont sell the globe seperatly and its $430 for a new LCD exluding GST, so i thought i would take a look at who manufactures the laptop LCD and then see if i can purchase a globe off them, cause the LCD is in fine condition . So wish me luck and thanks for your help, just thought i would keep you posted.

Regards,

Matt.

I know it's too late to mention this but I'm having the same problem and all you have to do in order to check if the inverter is your problem is use a volt meter on the fuses, one on the power fuse and one on the heat fuse.

Hi my problem is the opposite: the display is gone but the backlight is still on... Happen either on Linux or WinXP or during boot. No problem when booting with an external display. What should I do?

Alright sorry about the delay in replying, i have been patiently waiting for my globe to come in from USA, (im in Australia). Also, no its not underwarranty.
I ordered my backlight from http://www.lcdpart.com/doc/ccfl.html
and used this cross-reference to find what part i needed.
http://www.lcdpart.com/images/154ccfl.pdf
I had a samsung LCD, so i went with MS20334 part number.

So after a long and agonizin wait i got my lamp and went to put it in last night, had it all plugged up and ready to go, but my lamp didnt work, so i tried it with a similar laptop with a punched in screen. The lamp works. So i return with a question of what to do, because i had replaced the inverter board just a little while ago (2 months tops).

In short. Lamp works, inverter should work. LCD works, just not all together.

Could it be possible that when opening and closing the lid of the laptop the wire connecting to the back of the LCD has come loose?

hey guys....i am having a similar issue with my Acer Aspire 1320.

my issue....the backlight works great until i move the laptop, then it goes black. as the OP, i can still see the text, etc but it is very faint with no light behind it. its not in warranty any longer, but i dont mind taking it apart to check some things. i am assuming it may be a loose cable since its intermitent, but not sure, because if i use FN+F4 it will go to sleep and i can bring it up with the backlight again without issue, until i move it the wrong way again. any insight on what to check?

Similar Problem:

My Aspire 5000 laptop is booting but the LCD is completely blank and I am unable to use a monitor for external video either. Since the computer doesn't beep when it posts, i can't tell if its booting into windows or not..

Any suggestions?
