It might be late or stupid but... There is a pin that turns off the backlight when the notebook is closed - it might be broken. Did you check that?

just something no one ever bothers to check...

right hand side, near hinge. small button. It should be up when laptop is open, and closed (pushed down) when lid is closed. By chance is it stuck down? dirt and dust will sometimes cause it to get stuck.

I had the same problem with Aspire 5600 did everything that you did, nothing worked until I checked that on/off switch it was broken (stuck in backlight off position). There was no way i could fix it so i just disconnected it from the motherboard. You can view the pic of my mo-bo I made 1 - is the actual broken switch; 2 - is the connector that I had to disconnect from the mo-bo...: if u dont see this one then just click this link: http://picasaweb.google.com/vint202/TechStuff
