About the speakers: it's pretty loud if you turn it all the way max. The speaker's is strong enough to make you feel the rumble overall the chassis. As it's laptop speakers so it won't perform as good as desktop speaker. I especially like the treble sound there. The sound of treble is clean and high, which is perfect for songs with lots of guitar. The sound card is Realtek HD and it's pretty good . The software include did a good job in tweaking the EQ and sound effects.
Keyboard: The keyboard is rather soft, which makes very light noise when typing. The ctrl key and FN key switch places so it 's a little bit annoying when I press Ctrol C, V, W, T... when browsing firefox and transfer files.
Some of the Fn fuction F keys didn't work as expected. These are: Volume up, down, play/pause, next , previous, wireless(probably b.c of the wireless card).
The screen is ok to my opinion, I you do some slight tweak with Nvidian Color correction, it will be better to configure Black tones and White tones of the screen. The brightness of this screen is not as bright as the one I have on my Toshiba P105. After the tweak with Nvidia , the color does improve alot. There is very small light leakage and small dark corners on the bottom of the screen.( many screens nowadays has dark corners). This screen's SWXGA resolution does improve over XGA+ on my other TOshiba P105 screen. The Detail of the image is better and everything looks well blend together.
The video card is under clock which won't score high on 3Dmrk05. Original 350 / 700 scores: 3080 pts. If you unlock the Coolbits of Nvidia , overclock it to 450/920 (optimal setting of nvidia: 465/932). The setting will provide stable results to 4000 pts on 3Dmark05 without any overheat or anything like that. I noticed better performance on BF 2142 when overclock and I haven't had any issue with game or the computer. ( 1024x768, High everything, Med on Texture filter, 2x AA.)
Battery Life: If you overclock the system, the number of hours reduced to 1:00 of battery. If you left the video card's setting @ original stock setting, the battery life will be around 1:40 .
The cost: If you want an average system of 1.8 Core2, 1gb ram, 120GB hdd, wireless card, the cost will cost around 1400$.
My config : core 2 2.0, 2gb ram, 160gb.. will cost around 1600$ total. This price when compare to G1 or G2 will be a hard decision,. At first I would thought I'd go for G2 but the Lower resolution screen and the system's cost is 1800$.. so I'm not going to spend so much money for 1800$ laptop.
- MXM video card upgradable to 7900GS (I tried to remove the card but It seems stuck.)
- Good speakers
- customizable (of course) for budget user who'd like a 17" and decent Gfx card
-good performance of GFX card after overclock.
- All black finish, very nice paint job.
- 2mp webcam is very sensitive and can catch good pictures under low light condidion. FPS is not so fast though.
- HDMI, ESATA ports
- no media DJ control button ( I use this a lot on my E1705, I think E1705's media button is the best .
-Fn Ctrl keys 's position
-Glossy surface is a big o fingerprint magnets. It might get scratch easily but I haven't tried.
-Screen brightness and color is good , not so bright compare to Sony and Toshiba. It will need slight color adjustment to pleased the eye.
-Fn keys does not work with some function, a bios update would fix this.
-Some leds on the status (email, wireless) does not work properly. IT works on the first time I installed drivers and everything on the system. But after that, I removed some of the utilities out and it's gone...
WHO"S this system for??
- For anyone who like to "BUILD BY YOUR OWN" customizable hardware config. Save some money if you have the software ready. And Cheapest in performance of Asus's 17" line. W2p costs too much for mid-end users.
I have not yet test HDMI yet. I have to bring the notebook to my friend's house and hook it up with his 60" Pioneer Elite Plasma
. And I hope it's gonna work.
Great alternative to this is:
HP DV9000, Dell E1705 , and some other models that you can think of. HP is the closest one to compare with.
