Alienware m5790... Ordering on 1/26.

Sup people... Got a SWEET deal.. Basically my old Dell Inspiron with its putt putt Geforce2 go has lost its use... (i have a monster gameing rig desktop), so i have been in the market for a laptop for a year...

After doing all sorts of research, I wanted something i can use for business (Im a Level III Network Admin), and something i can play CS:S on at night while my wife snores next to me so i dont have to hear "Come to Bed!!" while im in my office fraggin away...

So i went to my boss (the owner of the co) and he agreed to pay for a portion of the laptop (Im gonna layout about $1400, he is gonna drop in $1400), but over time i'll wind up giving him maybe another $500 for it so its outright mine (we agreed that it is MY laptop, not the companys)..

So here is what i am ordering on Friday 1/26.

Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200 2.0GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB
Operating System (Office software not included): Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2
Display: Alienware® m5790 17" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD - Saucer Silver
Motherboard: Alienware® Intel® 945PM + ICH7 Chipset
Memory: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz - 2 x 1024MB
System Drive: Single Drive Configuration - 100GB Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s 7,200 RPM w/ NCQ & 8MB Cache
Primary CD ROM/DVD ROM: 8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW / 24X CD-RW Combo w/ Software
Video/Graphics Card: 256MB ATI Mobility™ Radeon® X1800
Sound Card: Intel® 7.1 High-Definition Audio
Wireless Network Card: Internal Intel® PRO Wireless 3945 a/b/g Mini-Card
Communications: Integrated 10/1000Mb Gigabit Ethernet & 56K V.92 Modem
Power: Vehicle AC Adapter - Belkin® AC Anywhere 300W Vehicle Outlet Adapter
Power: Additional Battery - Alienware® Area-51 m5790 8-cell Lithium-Ion Battery
Warranty: 1-Year AlienCare Toll-Free 24/7 Phone Support w/ Onsite Service
Alienware Mouse Pad: Alienware® Mousepad

Now i have some flexability here but im trying to keep it under $2800 shipped... So i could go with the 1440x900 screen and take the x1900 instead of the 1920x1200 screen and the x1800, but i would think the extra screen realestate and the x1800 should be plenty of oomph to play games on it... Now how comething like CS:Source will look on it at 1024x768 (or whatever low widescreen res it is) plays on it i dont know...

The extra battery is a key, as well as the vehicle charger, and i think the 2.0ghz processor with 4meg cache is perfect price break (the 2.16 adds like $300 to it, so i dont think an extra .16 ghz is worth it)..

The 7200 rpm drive will suit perfectly, and the 2gig ram ensures Vista will run with No issue at all.

I plan on partitioning the Drive for WinXP/IntelMacOS/Vista/BeOS and Linux perhaps.. Or may run Vista off an external hard drive.

Now Alienware DOES NOT offer accidental damage protection on their notebook, so i found ww.safeware.com that for $85 a YEAR I get FULL protection incase of damage, drop, fire, theft etc... a REAL bargain .. I HIGHLY recommend you all look into this if you spent more then $1500 on a laptop and dont have this in your warranty.

I cant WAIT to get it...

Sounds good. Only thing I would have changed is to go for the x1900, but seems like the x1800 will be great for what you want to do with the computer.

I think if I were you, I'd opt for the x1900 for future proofing, and lower the screen res to the 1440 x 900 screen.

The x1800 is no slouch, and the 1920 x 1200 screen is nice, but that's a pretty high resolution for that card if you hope to play future games at decent frame rates. CSS isn't going to be a problem for this rig either way. And if you're going to be using it for work, the high resolution is very hard on the eyes on a 17" screen for the eyes...

Just a thought, either way it'll be a great laptop.

I've used a 5750 w/ the 1440 x 900 screen and the 1920 x 1200 screen...

I would probably opt for the lower resolution screen now, even though I love the extra real estate...small fonts etc is really starting to strain my eyes...especailly since i have an external 24" lcd screen that I use w/ the higher resolution...

like HH said, I would opt for the x1900, the rest of your specs are pretty much identical to what I have...it plays CSS great and run FEAR faily well as well

awwwww sons of bitchs came out with a X1900 mobile......bastards.......

I wanna upgrade!

I know, right?

Nice rig, it should play CS:S with no issues... either res or either card. I havent had any complaints.

I love the 1920x1200 screen size... but if I were to order again... I would do the 1900 with the 1440x900 screen... just looks better in native, not to mention it will play better in native.

Well My order is in stage 2 right now, waiting for my bosses credit card to go thru.. According to alienware my m5790 is gonna ship on 2/7, so im in NY, i figure i'll have it on 2/12 or 2/13 if it meets ship date..

I will post mega review, pics, maybe even short video review.

They didnt have the 2.0 core 2 duo anymore, so i went with the 2.16... got the x1900 with the 1920x1200 screen and 1 gig of ram instead od 2 ( i can upgrade later, saving about $80), and the 100 gig 7200 rpm drive. NO blue ray, went with the standard dvd burner.

I have almost the exact same config 5790 comming as well. I called yesterday morning and upgraded my drive to the dvd burner and x1900 video card and it says I am at stage 6 as of yesterday evening. heheh site said it will be 69 days till more x1900 cards are back in stock...I wonder since I was not told that yesterday when ordering that I happened to get one of the last in stock? I'll be P.O.ed if I have to wait two freaking months longer..
anyways if all goes as planned my AW was due to ship the 5th and being right next door to AW here in georgia I hope to get mine by the end of next week. is that even being realistic?

Ohhh you don't say Kobra, I want to see pics of your laptop as well, I will return the favor and take pics of the m9750 whenever it is that it comes out IF it has that Santa Rosa motherboard I am dying to have and those shiny Dx10 graphics cards
post #15 of 26
yeah no problem! I got a call last night from AW and was told the x1900 cards were out of stock so I would have had to wait another 62 days to get my laptop shipped out..I ended up settleing for the x1800 just to get it in a reasonable time frame. so hopefully I will have it by mon or tuesday week after next...heheh

subdivisions, what stage are you in now? do you have to wait 6- days or did you get one of the last x1900's?
well my 5790 is here and lo-and-behold she arrived with the x1900 card installed!
I was shocked since I was told they were out and reordered with the x1800 to make due with but I guess they found one hiding and slapped it in. too bad I went economy with the processor though..I will prob never see how good the card will perform on a 1.66ghz chipset.....on the otherhand I was able to keep the total cost below $2200 though.
