Slow CD burning on an 8887

Since I bought my 8887, the Toshiba SD-R2412 could only burn CDs at 12x speed MAX using Roxio 5.3.5.10. It takes it ~8:35 to burn a 635MB ISO image. My desktop uses the same Roxio version and can burn the same iso image onto the same brand of CD in 3:53 (24X rated drive). The brand of CD has no effect.
I tried Nero 6.2 and got 24X speed but it kept locking up if I tried to burn 2 CDs in a row. Back to Roxio.
Has anyone had any similar problems? Have any advice?

Yeah, 8887. The 8890's predecessor. It's a year old.

Although the roxio versions in your laptop and desktop might be the same, it's possible that it has limited support for the SD-R2412 burner and can only burn at 12x, is there a patch available or is yours the latest v5?

That's one guess, my other would be that something is amiss on the driver level, quite possibly the ASPI layer. Have a look here for some info and here to download adaptecs latest generic drivers.

If none of that works, and if you can find a copy, give nero 5.5 a try. In my experience 6 is more than a little bug ridden, but 5.5 is pretty solid. It's also a much better tool than roxio once you get to know it.

I had an 8887 once, for all of about 5 minutes, until I realised they'd sent me the wrong HD, processor and ram (it wasnt a Sager). I decided to wait for an 8890 at that and I'm loving it. <My completely unrelated tale of woe and jubilation.

I'm looking in to the update from Roxio now. It's their latest for v5 (5.3.5.10q).
I'll also try finding Nero 5.5 to give it a try. Thanks.

OK that didn't work. it says the actual burn speed is 20x to start then falls to 8x. I found an old copy of Nero 5.5.10.54, it "says" burning at 24X but still took 7:24. Nero just isn't reporting the actual burn speed.
So... the $64 question is... Why would this drve not burn at full speed?

I just moved the drive to another slot and got the same result. Perhaps there's a firmware update for the Toshiba.

Well I removed the drive and installed it in my Dell I8000. It behaved the exact same way. What Gives?

Who has the Toshiba SD-R2412 drive and how long does it take to burn 650MBs? Could the drive be bad?
Don't believe Nero's display of 24X.

I might be RMAing this machine for the CD-RW and the dead battery.
