Graphics Artifacts with 8790 : Pink Colored Crap

OK...

I have tried playing BF1942 and COD and both exhibit this problem :-

Pink pencil like artifacts on the dark regions of the textures...totally ruins the gaming experience...

I dont know if this is a software issue or if the 9700 is bunk. I am trying out various drivers - the Sager drivers and the ATI drivers both give me the same problem. I am going to try the Omega drivers and then see but I am not optimistic...

I think this is one of those RMA's even before I get started...I was just beginning to love this machine when murphy's law had to kick in...why me

Is there a Demo version of BF1492 that I could tryout and see what my configuration does?

G,

I thought it was the software...but it looks like I have crap on my Bios screen as well...which means its clearly a hardware issue...this one is on its way back And I doubt they will cross ship a new one to me or even use a faster shipping considering that this is their fault...

Oh well...lets see how this goes...

Oh and BTW - This happens in ANY game including Benchmarks like 3D Mark 2003...see if you can find any artifacts on your screen...around the plane during the loading scene and run the DEMO in 3D Mark...you will see them IF you have the same problem which I hope you dont...

At least one of us deserves a working unit

Well we know that more than one of use got one. Download "BURINIT" from download.com and try that. You will have to turn on 3D in the "options". Let me know if you see the artifact there. It only runs 15 minutes, max, for the demo; however, I use it a lot, even though it is not the latest, greatest, and bestest. It still provides a good workout.

Hope that the new unit has zero defects, and that includes pixels.

My Solution

Hi
Mine had the same problem. The problem was even extended to windows ( word, excel, dvd playback, everything )
I contacted Sager Tech Support They had me upgrade my bios. that didn t work.
They then asked me to remove the keyboard and loosen or remove some screws. It seemed odd to me but it did work now everything is fine.
I will send you a picture of what screws to do this with.
But I don t know how to post them here. If you want I can email them. PM if you are interested.

Best Regards.

Pictures

Hello
Seing how many of you needed those pictures about the screws that needed to be loosened or removed I decided to make an effort to make them available to anyone that might have the same problem.

Here are the links.

I would like to point out that this procedure is not for making you system a better gaming system but rather to solve a problem with the video card that affected the entire visual aspect , windows, bios screen, startup screen everything.

I any of you had this problem , then this was Sager solution. For anything else specific to games I would like to say that I am not aware of any harware related issues when it comes to game performance. I never even did a benchmark !!!

Hope this helps.

I don't have a Sager, but I would like to try to make it more clear. So all you do is loosen them? Were they screwed too tight and they affect the GPU? or do you unscrew them and then do something? Please make a tad more clear for all those 8790 owners

6 Loosened, 1 Removed

Hi
Those were the words of Sager Tech Support.

So Yeah that is pretty much all there is too it. In my case I removed one of the screws because I couldn't put back the keyboard. I unscrewed them then rescrewed them carrefully so as not th thighten them too much. I am guessing that it did have some nuisible effect on the VPU. It solved my problem that is where I stopped.

Anything else I Can help with, be my guests.

it's strange but it worked. Thanks MKM. I could have never made the assosiation between screw tightness and laptop heat

it also seemed to fix the fans turning on all the time. Can anybody else confirm this?

Appears reasonable as all that is being done is opening up an air passage that allow air to circulate over the components. This should allow for greater heat dissipation and less need for the fan operations at the higher settings.

i am also getting these pinkish lines across my screen...never happened until about 2 months after i have it...now it's like every day, if only for a few minutes that i notice it.....if i bend the screen slightly they disappear...when i let it go they come back.....i only notice them on lighter backgrounds...you dont see them when the screen is black....

i will try to loosen the screws in a short while...i'll have my toes crossed! (cant use a screwdriver with my fingers crossed

just for the record, i havent seen any pink lines since i loosened those screws..then again, i only saw them for about 2 days, about 2 months after i received my laptop..let's hope i never see em again!

quick update...1 month later...i still havent had the pink lines come back...i wonder if these pink lines, and the 'flickering' problem are the same?

Lately my 8790's started artifacting. So far, it's limited to gaming only. As the summer has been hot and my apartment very hot, I thought that overheating was the cause. However, the temperature has dropped and I've loosened the screws according to previous posts in this thread. I tested KOTOR and failed. Today, I installed the latest drivers from Sager's website (8/11/04 drivers) and ran Age of Mythology: The Titans as a test. Within 5~10 minutes, my entire screen has artifacted to the point of almost not being able to see.

Loosening the screws didn't help.
It's not a temperature-related problem (I don't believe- AoM isn't that graphically intense and it only takes a few minutes to get completely artifacted; also, the room temp is currently 26C. Unit is raised above the floor by the FT Chopstick Cooling solution)
It's not a driver issue. Old drivers were fine and the newest drivers had no effect on the problem.

when i was getting those pink lines, it was not always when in a game....sometimes it was right after booting up, before i even started a program...pushing the lid back and forth a little...or even just holding the sides sometimes made them either go away or get worse....
either way..not so sure it's a driver issue....at least mine was not...i was using the standard sager drivers at the time....
