The best way to avoid this, is plug the power supply into the laptop, then plug the power cord into the outlet, THEN plug the power cord into ithe power supply. Thats what the manual says to do, in any case.

so my notebook is not doing anything strange, its just me not having read the manual?

Following the instructions in the manual will prevent the possibility of sparks occuring at the main power input due to connector mis-alignment (loved your diagram BTW ). However, this should not be an issue for USB ports. Personally, I've never seen sparks fly as a result of connecting any USB device. Does the problem occur only while attempting to connect one particular USB device?

I've experienced this myself, and believe it or not I have previous experience with edison connectors. Has anyone seen this design feature in other laptops? I sure haven't, but then again I've only been plugging things into outlets as long as I can remember.
