OEM Vista

Thread Starter
Does anyone know how the OEM versions of Vista will work on Dell's laptops? I know you cannot change the motherboard with OEM but what about components on the motherboard such as ram and the cpu? Can we upgrade these things without needing a new key?

I have heard a lot of stuff about OEM version. First off, I bought an OEM version of ultimate and installed it yesterday. No problems so far. From what I have gathered, Microsoft does not want you to transfer it to another system but there are many ways which you still can, without breaking rules. For instance, on the box of the OEM version or in the License agreement that I had to accept it said you cannot(meaning mainly that they don’t want you to) transfer the OS to another system unless of a malfunction, thins meaning if your MB breaks and you buy a new system I guess you can put it on their. I would imagine this would take a call to Microsoft but who cares, what 5 minutes?

The only issue I have with OEM is that MSFT can kill your activation and there's nothing you can do about it. Say for instance, your PC "dies" again. MSFT can, and they're well within their legal boundary to do so, decline reactivation and can cite anything as a reason, abuse for example.

Where as the Full version can be transferred an unlimited amount of times to other systems as long as you remove it from the previous one. MSFT cannot kill your activation.

Anyways, the full version of Ultimate is what, $400? That's just insane. I really don't know anyone who'd pay that for an OS. OEM Ultimate does seem to be priced where it should be for Full. And all those poor Europeans, paying 400 euros and 400 pounds in the UK. That's criminal.

Edit: In Canada, the Retail Ultimate is $500!! It's cheaper (by $30CAD) getting it shipped from the States.
Edit 2: $30CAD cheaper; not really cheaper if Shipping and Duty are factored in, so disregard.

The Retail Ultimate has both DVDs in the box (32 and 64).

Is the motherboard the only component the system locks itself to?

Only MSFT could answer that right now. There are a number of conflicting information on this and I would take it all with a grain of salt until it's all confirmed.

From reading the Vista NG many people there seem to be convinced that if your system dies, then your Vista OEM dies with it. Some say that certain components can be changed without anything required, while other components (MB, HDD?) will require you to call MS and get reactivation.

Of course MS reserves the final say whether you actually get reactivated or declined. I'm of the opinion that MSFT will act in good faith on this considering they're forcing this activation and new EULA on everyone and many people are not happy about it. There will, I'm sure, be a grace number of hardware changes that OEM licences fall under but who knows what that number is.

In my past experience with reactivating XP Microsoft takes customers at their word as it'd be too much of a pain in the ass to argue with them. So if your motherboard dies and explain your situation the activation line gives you the benefit of the doubt.
