The main differnece is no support and no fancy box. I just got the OEM yesterday and I love it. It seems dead on the retail version. Some have said you cannot install it on a different computer because it locks it self to your MB but on the box it states that you cant UNLESS of a malfunction, say your MB goes bad, I imagine with a simple call to Microsoft that you will be able to reactivate it. But thats about all the differnces.

All Yeah

AND ABOUT 50% OFF THE RETAIL PRICE!

Meh, 50% off is nothing. Free retail Vista Ultimate for beta testing for the win.

What about formatting/reinstalling on the same PC?

Also, what hardware does it lock itself to? I highly doubt upgrading your video card, ram, hdd, etc will lock you out of the OS. Is it just the motherboard? I wonder if thats even true...ive read conflicting reports.

Also, stradling, how does Vista run with 2 gig of RAM?

What about when you change the Video cards ? is it going to be like XP and force you to re-activate windows when you pass that hardware has changed threshold.

On the Case of the OEM box or maybe in the license agreement I read that Microsoft Vista OEM is not to be transferred to another computer, it goes on to further explain and then at the end it states that the only reason it may be transferred is if it is due to hardware malfunction.

What this meant to me was if your motherboard goes nuts and you go buy a new computer, or I imagine that Microsoft took in mind customers of companies that offer accidental protection may receive a whole new PC for the replace (ex. people that had M170's get M1710's now). Obviously in this case you would have a choice but to accept the new hardware. Sure, I imagine this would talk a call to Microsoft but I have had to make them with XP because of using my license to many times.

So far I absolutely love Vista. I have not seen my RAM exceed 1.2GB. That would have been with a lot of programs open. Right now my RAM is at about 800MB with a few programs open. What I realized is it seems that windows will use about 700MB or ram but you could open a few programs and the RAM wont change. It is like once you start using RAM windows will give some up.

What does the OP mean by "vista dsp eom"?
My thoughts exactly. I think all those who answered missed the point. He's asking the difference between "OEM" and "DSP OEM". I see tigerdirect.ca has a lot of DSP OEMs for a pretty good price (cheaper than an "upgrade" version) but am wondering what I'm giving it. If it's microsoft support, then who cares. Did you ever call Microsoft for help with windows?
The short answer is the DSP is not hardware locked and comes with NO support from Microsft per se . For more in depth explaination try the forums at www.pcclub.com . This site belongs to a nation wide computer sales/repair compnany that offers the OEM and DSP versions .

DSP/OEM is what I'm running on my GW MX6447 Notebook, the (DSP) means, that its a non-(BIOS locked-version) meaning unlike the OEM that ships w/ your PC, that version Can't be used on anything else, it will only work on a BIOS Locked, DELL, HP/COMPAQ, ACER, GATEWAY, (some DELL'S are known the work and are NOT LOCKED) ect. where as a DSP Version isn't BIOS LOCKED and therefore dose NOT ship w/ the PC or Notebook, other than Being BIOS LOCKED, it's still the same OEM Version of Windows, (unless it's a Restore OEM Version) I hope this didn't confuse you even more.................. LOL How many times can you reinstall this................LOL as many times as you can get-away with it ROFLOL!!! just kidding........
