Hey,

Today my built in speakers on my 9300 just stopped working. I can plug in headphones and other external speakers, but once I pull it out...sound is gone

What could it be?

It could be a few things, although its odd both went instead of just 1 of them. I would open her up and check there is no loose wire. Other wise contact dell spare parts and get a pair of new speakers.

Restore an image (ghost or acronis) if you have one to see if the problem is software/driver/codec related. Or if you have an earlier system restore point, you could try that.

Isn't there something I could try in dos? I don't wanna mess up my programs and whatnot w/ restore points or things of the like.

Nope. It was at a low level but made no difference when I put it higher. Also, under advanced, PC spk mute was NOT checked.

New motherboard time. The sound port is broken. You can resauder it to try to make it work, but other than that, you have to get a new motherboard.

How come headphone jack still works? Does it go through a different sound port? Is there any way of getting Dell to send me a newer lappie b/c of this?

Well its just loose. If you still keep using it, it will eventually die. And you just might be able to. If they don't have the replacement motherboard, they might just send you a new one.

How is battery life on the newer laptops with powerful video cards?

Right now on a new battery, minimum screen brightness, video card battery mode (powerplay), and a bunch of other little optimizations like CPU voltage and such, I can get 6 hours+!!! A usage of about -11.5W as seen in NHC under battery charge rate.

They started working again last night!

Was it because of a hardware issue or software?

WEll I wasn't sure what made them come back, but now I'm pretty sure what IllegalEagle said is correct. That's because today when I took out my external speakers from the jack, the lappie's speakers AGAIN did NOT work. I fiddled w/ the headphone port for a bit, and they started to work again! Now they're working still but who knows maybe in 6 months or so it will stop coming back on alltogether. I DO use the headphone jack a lot for plugging in speakers, and headphones when I'm at school, so you would expect it'd get broken, but w/e that's why I have 3 year warranty

If you have onsite service, dell will send a tech out with a new motherboard. If they were to upgrade you, they would give you an E1705 with an X1400. But at least you would get Core 2 and an upgrade path.

I have the same issue on my XPS. You have to press on the headphone plug port to make it work.

No, try sticking your headphones in to the mic port, play some sound and wigle the headphones areoung. That was my probluem, that is if the headphone jack and mic jack are next to each other.

The headphone port on these laptops has a built in circuit that cuts off the speakers when headphones or external speakers are plugged in. What happens is through use and or abuse of the jack the short that deactivates the internal speakers stays there even if you unplug the externals.

If you have warranty it's a motherboard swap. There's plenty of boards for your system still around so it's an easy replacement for an experienced tech.
