m6805 going from 1800mhz to 800 randomly

hey, my m6805 randomly jumps from 1804 mghz to 804mhz. its plugged in, the lil ac power light is constaantly on. but yet, the fluctuations. they're not just fluctuations in the numbers though, it slows down my computer noticably when it drops even if just for a second. any ideas on how to fix it?

That's called throttling. Most mobile CPUs have that to throttle down the clock speed of the CPU when it is not needed to reduce heat and help on battery life. The AMD chips all throttle down to 800MHz then if you start a program or play games, it will automatically throttle up to the max clock when needed. You shouldn't notice any effects of it at all. If you want it stay at 1.8GHz, then set the power scheme to Always On, but it doesn't add any extra benefit, it just runs on full clock even though you don't need it.

thats why i think there's a problem. it is set as "always on" and i definatly notice a severe drop in performance every few seconds (which is when the clock reader tells me it goes down to 800). that, and it never used to do this before. it's just been in the last couple months, and it really hurts especially when playing games such as NFS most wanted. it'll run great for a few seconds then slow drastically when it throttles down then speed back up... it gets really annoying (pluse hurts the gameplay). even when i overclock it to 2000mhz it drops down to between 800-900mhz.

Are you noticing any increasing heat? Sounds like the CPU is overheating and throttling down to reduce the temp. You may need to open it up and replace the thermal compound. Also on what occasions are you experiencing this problem? Are you playing games, encoding video, browsing the internet, playing music? You can also try to download the latest AMD drivers and utilities.

it's all the time, if it's idle, playing a graphics intensive game, surfing the internet, everything. and yea, it's been heating up, i think the fans inside are dying, so i keep it cool by an external fan (which actually works pretty well). how would i go about replacing the heat compound?

What are you using to read the CPU speed?

latest version of clockgen, pc wizard 2006, speedfan, and even if i click on system from control panel at the moment it drops down it'll tell me i have an 804mhz amd 64

Try RMclock for the throttling control. That will at least let you know if it is the powernow drivers causing the problem, or some hardware issue.

i downloaded rm clock. it still jumps down the same, the multiplier and voltage just both drop down to 1/2 what they were... completely ramdomly... grrrr

i didn't have the internet for about 6 months before last week, but i've updated everything i can find from xp patches & usb driver updates to the newest version of aim... although i haven't been to amd's site. i'll try there now
