Replacing Hard Disk in A25-S207, what fits?

I am starting to have major issues starting up my Toshiba A25-S207 laptop.

I left for a trip, carried my laptop as a carry on, and when I arrived I could not get my laptop to get past the Toshiba screen. I closed the cover, hit the top, all but giving up on it, then decided to give it one last go. Guess what? It started right up.

Now if I turn the laptop off for any time at all, I have to hit it hard to get it to re-start. It will reboot just fine.

When it is operational, it sounds as if the harddrive is constantly running. Not grinding, but spinning as if it is looking for something. This continues as long as the computer is on. This leads me to believe the hard disk is bad, am I wrong?

I am looking to replace the hard disk, and am hoping someone here can direct me in the right way. I will be looking to go with at least 100 gigs, and am hoping to buy from New Egg.

If you have suggestions, I am open to them. I have read on here that Seagate and Fujitsu hard disks are the most trusted in the laptop world.

What disks should I be looking at, and is there anything special I need to get?

Thanks

Will ATA-6 hard drives work for this upgrade?

What is the best way to transfer the data from one disk to the other?

You should be able to install most any parallel ATA 2.5" hard disk, including any ATA-6 drive.

If you've got a spare computer handy, it's real easy to aquire a USB2.0 2.5" hard disk enclosure and install your existing drive in it then copy your files to the computer's hard disk, swap out your old 2.5" HD for the new one in the enclosure then copy your files from the computer to your new hard disk.

Optionally you could just install your new HD in your laptop, run the Toshiba restore DVD to restore the laptop back to its factory state then install your old HD in a USB2.0 2.5" HD enclosure and copy all your old files over to the new HD with no other computer needed.

ok, that's what I will do. I already have the external harddisk enclosure, I just have to find it!

Befiore doing that I'd try to run Hitachi's Drive Fitness test. That will diagnose the HDD and tell you if it really is failing or not.

But I second what meekus said. Any 2.5" IDE drive will work. The only drives that will NOT work for you are the serial ATA (aka SATA) ones. A 2.5" ATA-6 drive is perfect.
