HELP! Being Hacked right this second?! Wireless Crisis!

Help! I just installed wireless on my PC (Im new to wireless)

I found out its broadcasting outside my home to many houses under default settings. Over the 2 days I suddenly got Spyware? (Whist not browsing?) I cleaned my system with Ad-aware Lavasoft.com and again I got spyware someone under the name Kirik (some boy who lives 5 doors away) Accessed my network.



How I secure IT! Simple AS! no website i can find tells me! just says what to do no steps on how to change any settings


all websites say WHAT TO SECURE but no answer on how to do it?!?


Whats MAC? how I change it? whats WEP? how I change it?

I simply want to prevent my network form extending 100 meters! I just need it for 2 meters jeez!

you need to consult the manual to your router. you can get it online if you dont have a hard copy. Each routers setup is a bit different. You will need to access your router via your web browser and setup a password, etc.

But what you want really want to do is either setup WEP or WPA security. WEP uses a 10 digit key where WPA just uses a password of your choosing. It will be in the wireless security page of your router.

You should be able to type your IP address into IE and that should take you to your router setup page. Use WEP or WPA. If by chance you dont know your IP address you can get it by opening the command line and typing IPconfig

4 defences.

1. dont broadcast ssid (should also be changed to something different. change default password too)
2. turn on firewall
3. turn on encryption
4. use mac filtering for wireless access

what model router is it, and i can help with more specifics.

Also, ensure you have a personal firewall, antivirus etc etc. make sure you keep your os up to date - but remmember even when you are not using the internet - you are still connected to it - so people can see you regardless of weather u use the internet or not. But ensure the hardware firewall is turned on - use as stated either WEP or WPA encryption to stop your friendly neighbours using your bandwidth. as stated read the manual there will be a specific ip address to change your settings (normally like 192.168.0.1) - make sure you use a password for this IP address to stop your neighbour from blocking you out!!!!

Use MAC filtering and there's no way he can get in unless he some how magically knows your MAC address and is able to spoof it, which I highly doubt he can.

Also, are you sure he's "hacking" you? Spyware generally doesn't lead to being hacked.

P.S. If he by chance ARP poisons your router, he can access all your passwords!

if you don't know anything about it, this would be a really good time to either hire someone or have a friend who knows about routers and security come in and help you. This can get pretty complicated.

not really these days routers are made to accomodate avg users especially ones made by netgear or linksys and if possible microsoft branded ones (which they stop making)

MAC Filtering is pretty worthless by itself with WPA it works well. You can collect packets and get the correct MAC addresses then spoof them. Mind you not EVERYBODY is going to do this, it does take several minutes to do. WPA is just as easy to setup as WEP and WPA is alot more secure. 8 digits is all you need for a WPA password.

I don't know Machina, I've had customers that are so intimidated by technology it amazes me these people can function in a job or even cook food. They're just lucky I charge $75 to setup a Wireless network and not $150 like Geek Sq

What brand is your router?
Chances are you can click one of the following links to configure your router then configure as people above have suggested.

http://192.168.0.1/
or
http://192.168.1.1/

username: admin
password: admin

Those are the most common for linksys d-link and netgear.

First thing to do is change the password.
If you can't change the password, its possible a neighbor already did it.
You can press the RESET button and it will restore defaults and try again.
