My Ferrari has suddenly started hanging on the mup.sys file at startup. I can't get to anything in XP. Not even safe mode with a command prompt.

This is a common problem for Windows XP that seems to be caused by a lot of things so there are many solutions. But one of the solutions most often suggested is to use the XP setup CD to run the recovery console and repair the file.

Therein lies the problem. We didn't really get XP setup CD's with our Ferraris! As far as I can tell Acer's system disks that came with the Ferrari are limited to totally recovering the entire image of the partition to factory standards. The disks do not seem to have any way to run the recovery console.

I dual boot Linux so I can access my data files with that. I haven't lost the important stuff. And I have a image backup of the entire partition from July (using Image for Windows)--so this is not a horrible crisis. But I hate to wipe out the programs and settings I've installed on the Ferrari since July simply because one stupid file may be corrupted.

Is there anyway to access the XP recovery console? Something I'm not understanding here?
