Memory upgrade suggestions

Hi everyone. I've been watching this forum for a few weeks now and finally decided to buy the 8887 last week. It should be coming this Friday! Anyway, it only has 256mb RAM and I knew I could find a lot cheaper upgrade for it and put it in myself. I was planning on a 512 module, but a few friends have suggested it's not worth the price because they do great with 512 total. I know the laptop hd's are slower and so I'm worried about using it too much for swap space. Also, since there are only 2 slots, if I ever want more, I'd basically have wasted a 256 chip. Any input on whether that extra bit would make a noticable difference? Uses are both office/school work and also, hopefully
, gaming. Thanks for your help,

Kevin

Yeah, there is no reason to purchase another 256. Get 512 and turn off the swap file, you will see a decent performance boost (it is BARELY manageable wit 512, 768 will work better). No swap file means less disk access means slightly more battery life too. Let us know which ram you purchased and how well it works.

If you're just using if for office apps and school, you will do just fine with 512MB. I suggest you get just 256MB with your order, and order another 256MB module from crucial.com. At $42.99 +tax free shipping, I don't think you can go wrong with them. Heck, I paid $70 for my 256 MB module 2 months ago, so the price is really good from them.

I would only consider buying a 512MB module (for a total of 768MB) if you play heavy games like Everquest or the such.

Photoshop elements will not run on my machines with 512mb of ram with the swap file disabled.

Does anybody know if this program actuall needs more than 512mb of ram or if it is just something about the software that detects whether the swap file is enabled?

It would be helpful if somebody with more than 512mb could turn off their swap file and try to run Photoshop elements.

thanks!

Thanks for your help! You guys are great! I think I'm going to go for the 512 piece cause I just have to wait an extra 2 weeks for the paycheck...heck, I've waited a couple years for the notebook, I think a couple more weeks for even a somewhat-noticable change in game performance will be worth it.

Also, I use photoshop, so when the 8887 comes and I get it up and running, I'll try disabling the swap and see if it works.
Thanks again
