Im switching from pc to mac. Sick of viruses.. What mac laptop is faster than my Sony Vaio intel pentium 4 2.80ghz

I see no mac w/2.80ghz

All Mac laptops will be faster as they use new processors that are not only more efficient than the Pentium 4 but are also dual core.

So dual core is faster than p4?
No.

Dual core is two processors and if you have software that can take advantage of two processors then it's going to be very fast. Software that can't take advantage of two processors—the majority of software out there today—will only run on one of the processors but switching between applications will be much smoother.

That said, just one of the processors, even though they're only at 2 to 2.3GHz, will be faster than your 2.8 GHz, so all that software that can't use both of them at the same time will run quicker anyway.

First you say it wont be faster. Then you say it will with duo when using one app. im lost.

haha, it comes down to just one thing - Frequency is NOT the decide all factor- Core 2 duo processors (what macs use now) are faster than most P4's (in most applications) because they A) have more L2 cache B) are dual core* C) are more efficient D) are 64 bit* (Items denoted by asterisks are only applicable in particular circumstances.) take AMD and Intel for example, the naming scheme AMD uses (3800+, 4000+ etc...) could be used as a rough* comparison to intel P4 chips (as most intel chips are known by their core frequency) An AMD 2800+ runs at 2.06 ghz (if i remember right) yet, was roughly on par with a 2.8 ghz P4, because Frequency isn't everything. i would have to say that a 1.86 ghz core 2 duo (slowest processor on new intel macs) will be faster than a 2.8 ghz p4 in almost everything (i never owned a P4 so i cannot personally vouch for its performance, however i have an AMD 2800+ ,2.13 ghz P-M, and a 2.0 core 2 duo, and the difference between the three are huge.) Add the efficiency of mac os x over windows, and i assure you, you will not be disappointed.

oh ok thanks for informing me. I had never knew that. I always thought ghz was key. I was going to wait until mac got to 2.8 or better, but now I know better.

A 2 Ghz macbook will do you proud compared to a 2.8 P4....
That's because Intel wanted you to think GHz were what was important. But now that they've realised they can't keep up they've had to change. The new processors are slower in terms of cycles but are much more efficient about what gets done during those cycles and thus are more powerful. And you get two of them to boot.

Good info.

read up on intel core 2 duo micro-architecture for an in-depth explanation of why it can do more per cycle, and the other advantages over netburst.
