Not worth it.

I send an email after I got my new laptop to say it still had the voltage problem. Now dell called me, but I was just in the lessons, I will call them again tomorrow. Hope they have good news.

I have three year on site service agreement. I guess I have two choices.

1: Ignore the problem and hope it breakes completely at the end of that period

2: Buy a three prong adapter and hope i don't get to the breaking point at all.

I think will go for the first one (back up of everything important on external drive).
I guess it's cheapest way for both me and Dell =o)

As for the recommendation to unplug the AC adapter everytime you attach any device...THATS JUST STUPID!!!!

Have you got any idea how many times a day i use the USB ports on the laptop??
I will make sure that the next time i buy a laptop i say i can do this without tingling ..LOL

Or perhaps DELL can offer me a choice next time..
" Do you want the laptop with or without tingling? We have a special offer on the tinglers today "

I just got contact again with dell. They called me, and they say they werent able to do anything about my problem. But I could send them a letter with a good description of my problem, and normally i will get an answer then.

The guy @ telephone also said I needed to try laptop @ another place to see if i get voltage there.

He also told me a good joke. He said I needed to use a grounded socket. But ?? The adaptor doesn't even have a ground !!!

The guy also told me he says there are no problems with dell (but only between 8 & 17 .. aka helpdesk opening hours) LOL !

To Be Continued ...

A Complete Report On My Problems
I beg to differ with your explanation, Mike. My Inspiron 9400 is 9 months old. In that time, I have had video card problems (which led to the replacement of the original ATI X1400 with an NVIDIA 7900 card by Dell) and two hard drive failures.

I would have to say that where there is smoke, there is fire.

Edit:

Incidentally, I tested the case voltage on my 9400 with a digital multimeter this morning. Results: AC voltage = 45, AC amperage = 0.25 Amps. Probably enough to light up a string of LED lights.

I came across this thread last night, I checked my laptop, an e1505. I found 44v from the screws. I emailed dell and am waiting for them to contact me.
I wanted to point out that I didn't come here looking for a voltage problem per se, but I was seeking information about the general reliability of the Inspiron 9400 relative to the component failures that I have experienced. So, power leakage problem seems to indicate a possible reason for my component failures.

Note that I tested an Inspiron 8200 with the same multimeter and got a reading of 0.5 v AC and negligible amperage (normal background readings).

Edit:

I note also that I have frequently got what I thought were static shocks off this computer, both from the case (got one today) and while plugging USB devices in an out. One time, I killed a new 2 Gig USB thumb drive. I thougth that this was from my rubber soled shoes, but now I wonder. I live in a warm, wet coastal climate where we don't usually have a lot of trouble with static electricity.

Well, Dell got back to me and informed me that they are going to pick up my laptop and have it repaired at the Repair Depot. I am unsure about this because what I think they'll do (because they assume I'm ignorant) is replace a bunch of crap that isn't related to this issue to try to make me feel better, accomplishing nothing.

Have we narrowed down the problem to the lack of ground on the AC adapter or is it possibly something else. Should I let Dell work on my computer? I don't really trust them to mess around with it....

I've already mentioned numerous times...replacing the AC Adapter with a 3-pin one fixes the problem.
Dell Asia/Pacific fixed my problem within 3 days of me emailing them.

Why Dell USA are so clueless as to what is going on is beyong me.....

I wonder if the problem is cured or hidden. The grounded power supply may channel the stray current to ground, but that doesn't elminate the source of the stray current. It still could mean that some live component is in contact with the chassis and that there is current present in places where there should be none. It also could mean that a high voltage static discharge could back track through the source of the current leak, making the machine more vulnerable to damage from static hits.

Most, if not all electronic devices emit some form of a measurable stray current. Generally, its channeled back to ground through a ground pin. I still cant get over the fact that they didnt included a grounded adapter with a laptop. It really is foolish.

I dont think they are clueless, i think they just dont care so long as it cant harm a person.

My assistant has basically jsut proven my whole point using MultiSim. He has shown me that the laptop is designed to have a grounded adapter, but doesn't. Personally I am actively seeking to trade my Dell for ANY other brand laptop with the same or compairable specs. I am just simply DONE with (go to hell) Dell.
ViriiGuy, is it maby possible to send that MultiSim file ?
my email is info at dupondje dot be

The more proves I have, the more I can do against dell !

Honestly I have been dealing with Dell for 3 months on this. The file would do you no good. And unfortunately we did not save the file and export it, so he would have to do it all over again. He had some free time and was just wasteing time.

Sorry. But like I said, the file would do you no good.

guys check this link out ...they have 3 prong power cords for our current AC adapters..so i think all we need is just the 3 pronged cord connected to our existing bricks
post #279 of 352
Dell told me I would lose warranty if I use other than supplies adapter!

No, you need a whole new AC Adapter. Your current one only has 2 pins on it, you need a new one with 3.
