[Not sure if this goes here or in the Acer forum ...]

I have purchased an Acer 3690 for the sole purpose of loading Ubuntu on it. It have run the Live CD and all works well. I plan on making a restore CD (of Windows Vista), just in case.

My question is, I have read of the "secret partition" Acer puts on their CDs. If I install Ubuntu on the entire disk (wiping it clean), will that make it impossible to restore (if necessary, although I don't intend on it)?

Depends on what is on that secret partition and what that restore disk actually does(Since I am not familiar with it)

Most of the time that secret partition serves one of two purposes, either a diagnostic hardware check, or a small linux based DVD player that some manufacturers pass off as the ability to play DVDs without turning on the computer.

In either case the CDs/DVDs that came with the computer usually can restore it(And restore windows at the same time)

go have fun with ubuntu. you will always be able to reinstall windows if youo have the urge.

Did you install Linux on your laptop?

I am running Kubuntu on my Acer 5102 from an external hard drive. Generally I like it but there are several things in Kubuntu I have not figure out yet so I can use everything i want to use.

One is internal card reader. It just doesn't seem recognized any where. But If I put the the SD card into a USB card reader and plug it into a USB port it shows up right away?

Yes, I did install it. Although I installed Ubuntu. The only problem I have had is getting it to sync with my Palm but I understand that is a problem with v6.06 Not a big deal. Otherwise, it has worked beautifully! It hooked right up to my Windows network, downloaded any needed updates to the software and other programs. I really like it!

Does your laptop have an internal card reader or built in camera? If so, do either show up and work?

I am still syncing my Axim with my desktop but was wondering if I need to get Palm OS PDA if I want to go totally Windoze free.

It has an internal card reader but I don't use it. No camera, though. There are two current version of Ubuntu: 6.10, which, from what I see on the forums, runs the Palm PDA fine. The other version is 6.0.6 (which I have). It's the one that has problem syncing. However, it has 3 years tech support compared to the 6 months with 6.10.

I have 6.0.6 (dapper) and my treo 650 syncs just fine. I just don't know how to load apps so I do that on an old win partition I have on my desktop.
