I can see how most of those only need low speed. Not convinced about the memory card reader. Thanks for the list of what thet hub is connected to, useful. I assume its the same on M90.

What model are you guys doing things on? I have an m170 and I've just made a visit to the BIOS and don't find any way to force USB 1.1 or USB 2. The closest thing I can find is whether or not to allow USB devices to wake the computer.

I knew the idea would be too good to be true in my case. :-( Just for reference, I'm using BIOS A05.

It might not be an option on the M170. I was referring to my M1710.

Back to the drawing board, then. It seems like everyone has a 1710, yet no one has a Gen2 or m170 anymore.

Please, someone help me, i have an inssue similar to williamG. My Screen flicker when i maximize/minimize a window, but when i open texas hold'em for example the flicker still and don't disapeer before i close the application. I have all the drivers installed including dell's nividia driver for my go 7900gtx. In Xp it never happens. I tried to change the pci-express power setting with no sucess. Thanks.

Assuming you have Vista 32Bit,

Go here,
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...howtopic=13185

and read the instructions on how to install those drivers and also download them. They helped a lot with the flicker issue. In XP with the correct drivers all we had top do was disable powermizer and the flicker would go away but we dont have that option yet with Vista.

I'll just stick with xp :P

whats this about usb 2.0 switching? I noticed my memory card is slow, could that be b/c of that usb2.0 thing? Also, how do I know that readyboost is working? I set it up on my memory card but how do I know its working?

just a case of getting used to it

Hey guys.........the issue with the whine noise is related to the Core2Duo CPU power saving modes. When system conditions allow, the CPU cycles itself down into the C4 mode. This transition between C3/C2/C1 states and C4 state is what we're all hearing.

Some humans can't hear at this frequency, but most can. Anyone remember the hype around the "Bee Ringtone?" It's roughly at that frequency and some folks just can't hear that high up there. I'm one of the unfortunates that can.

Macbooks have been experiencing this issue too and the fix is to install a kernel module called "ShhMBP." This module completely disables the ability of the kernel to allow the CPU to drop into C4 state at all. I've not really noticed any reduction in battery life, but then again, I'm just peachy that it works.

Now I only wish my XPS 1710 had the same fix for Vista!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's what's needed though, to disable the friggin' C4 power saving state of the CPU.

Hope that helps a bit. Google it, and search at Intel's website for the various power states.......it's all there.

***EDIT -- To clarify, the power saving modes are really called "Sleep States", according to Intel. And the C4 mode that's making all the noise is called "Deep Sleep." I think there's another state, C5, but it's not been enabled in the hardware. I don't know.......I'm not an engineer, just a geek like everybody else here.
