VGN-A290 Disassembly Help Please

I am helping a friend with a dead VGN-A290 (it will no longer turn on). I need to remove the hard drive to retrieve the data files. I have gotten as far as removing the keyboard and the two screws underneath, only to have the gray bezel swing loose from the bottom edge. However at the top edge, near the power switch and other buttons, the bezel appears to be attached in the center, and I can find no way to remove it. I need to remove the bezel in order to get to the hard drive underneath. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any ideas as to why it won't turn on would be appreciated as well. I've tried everything Sony suggested about pressing the power button for 15 seconds with and without the battery, but I can't get a peep out of this thing. Thanks again!

I am having the same problem. I have removed all the screws from the bottom of the case and am reluctant to pry to hard on anything. Would certainly appreciate some help on how to get the hard drive out.

If you look above, you will see my first reply to my own post where I reference a thread entitled "Sony Vaio A-Series (A150) Upgrades - Bluetooth ++". In that thread, "skelzer" covers the disassembly process. Here is a recap of what I did:

1) Remove every screw on the bottom that has an arrow pointing to the screw. I counted 23 of them.
2) You can now remove the keyboard. Carefully disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable.
3) There are two screws under the keyboard securing the metal cage. Remove these and you should be able to lift up the entire bezel at this point. The bezel appears to be hung where the power button and other buttons are located, but a little extra pressure will cause the entire bezel to release. Be certain to remove two more ribbon cables (one for the touchpad and one for the buttons) before lifting the bezel off completely.
4) At this point you should be able to get to the hard drive by remove the screws securing the memory stick reader and then the screws securing the drive itself.

Again, please read the other post I referred to, as it contains the information I used to get to the hard drive. You may want to take some digital photos along the way to help you "remember" how to put it back together. I have never seen a laptop with a hard drive so difficult to get to. Way to go, Sony!

Remove the keyboard. To do this you will need a small screwdriver.
By the CTRL ALT SPACEBAR CTRL keys are latches. Push the latches in. there are 4. The keyboard will pop off from the bottem. Remove the keyboard and touchpad harness cables. DON’T PULL THEM OUT!
There are little locking bars on them on the motherboard. Then you will find the other screw you need to remove.

Also I think your bios had a bad flash or something. You can replace them; you will need a new motherboard.

I have removed keyboard/cable and two screw underneath, can you please write more on how to remove tocuh pad cable and bezel, mine is sony A600, till now procedure looks to be compitable with this. I need to change power jack. It is finding difficult to remove two cables, which are joined at motherboard by some white connector. Cable come from top of connector or along with connector? Afterthat bezel should be lifted from fornt like LCD screen opening or else?

thank you

Hi
I have a sony VGN-A690 also, I have a different problem.
I purchased the laptop 2 years ago, reciently it just quit running, it was under warrenty so I took it to the geek squad at best buy, they replaced the motherboard and sent it back to me. At that time I found out that three keys on the keyboard were not working and that whenever I ran a game with extreem graphics the thing would shut down. I sent it back. Now the keys work but still have the same problem with the cooling.THEY ARE WEARING ME OUT! Would you guys send it back again or should I try and do it myself?
Obviously they have caused a restriction in air flow or the heatsink & fan are not working properly.
The disassembly instructions have helped, I just need to know how to replace (or check) the fan & heat sink.
Thanks

If you try to work on your laptop yourself your warranty will void. Best Buy will no longer be responsible for your laptops warranty. If your motherboard went out I’m shocked that Sony just didn’t replace your unit. I would have Best Buy replace your laptop. If wouldn’t cost Best Buy anything. Also make sure your laptop has all the original hardware that it came with, Memory, CPU, Wireless Lan etc. if your CPU is overheating the only thing I can think of is that someone replaced the CPU with another one and didn’t replace the head sink and fan. With laptops heat sinks are made specifically for certain processors
The tube on the heat sink need to touch the bottom of the laptop, that’s why laptops have metal on the bottoms of the chasse, it’s a secondary cooling device. If someone removed your old CPU and replaced it with a smaller CPU then the heat sink tube will not make contact with the secondary cooling device. If seen this happen before with Best Buy.

Thank you for the reply,
I will see if they will respect their warranty, I wonder if the fact that this laptop has been disscontinued will matter?

Do you still have the manufactures warranty?
If so I wouldn’t remove the HD.
