Area 51m 7700 - Vista & Realtek 880 problems?

Thread Starter
I have an Alienware 7700 (Clevo D900T) with MB REV 6.1. I was involved in the Vista Beta program and have been trying out each release in hopes that there would be a fix to this issue. Vista works fine except for one major problem, No Audio...

I have tried using every Realtek HD Audio Codec released. I have tried every driver combination possible as well as removing the base audio and modem drivers from the Vista DVD and reinstalling. I have searched the web and found no articles or forums on this subject.

After installing Vista and looking in Device Manager, I find 39 unknown devices under High Definition Audio Controller under the PCI bus. This is a list of the unknown devices in System Information:

Obviously this should be one device and it should be automatically installed after installing Realtek's HD Audio Vista drivers.

From experimentation, I have found the onboard Modem device to be somehow linked with Realtek's HD Audio Device. As far as I know, there are no SmartLink Modem Vista Drivers available. So I tried installing the Modem with Alienware's XP drivers. It seemed to install correctly and it did remove the 39 unknown devices and install one modem device in Device Manager. No audio yet, but a restart is required (maybe then?). So after restarting Vista and looking in Device Manager, the "correctly" installed modem and 39 unknown audio devices were not appearing. Both the modem and unknown audio devices had vanished... I have run out of ideas to troubleshoot this further.

Any other 7700 users have Vista running with onboard audio? Please let me know your exact hardware specs and any information that you think could be useful...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I remember trying that with the Beta with no sucess. I don't want to mess with my Windows XP instillation at this time.

Thanks for the reply though. Keep em coming! ^_^

How did you get Vista to install? It gives me the "Windows in unable to find a system volume that meets the criteria for installation" error and I don't know how to get around it. Any ideas/solution would be greatly appreciated. I'm working on installing Vista to a second partition I made in my RAID drives. I formatted it, but I get this error even after loading the XP RAID Promise drivers.

I think I remember from the Beta that Vista will not install on the 7700's RAID configuration. However, I had no problem on my desktop... I just gave up and used one HDD for Windows XP and part of the other for just Vista.

I too have had the same issues with no sound when loading vista. I have on the other hand been able to sucessfully do it on my 7700 with raid 0 by using the newest drivers from promise for the 378 controller.
So you used the Promise drivers and not the AW ones? I was going to look up the Promise controller drive tomorrow, but tonight I only tried the AW driver. Thanks for the reply.

*EDIT* Could you link me to the correct drivers? I'm having trouble fiding the right one to use....

ok i had my 7700 running with vista for almost a month heres how you get audio on it

you need to download hte Beta drivers from the realtek website im not at my computer right now but ill post the exact link and driver name in a couple of hours once i get home, the problem is this.

you will be able to have audio on it but you cannot change the audio ports configurations on the computer becuase the driver is for a dektops motherboard but at least you have sound on the speakers and heapdhones the outputs and inputs will work normally but in default mode they have.

I have tried just about every driver that Realtek has released. The computer doesn’t detect an Audio device at all, just ~40 unknown devices that it classifies as modems. I'm not sure what the deal is. When you get a chance, please list (as best you can remember) the exact order of all drivers along with your motherboard revision and if the system in intel or amd.

Thanks for the reply.

When did you buy your 7700? Any ideas on what is different on our setups that might cause the audio device to be hidden in one case and work fine in the other?
Hoshie, which RAID driver did you use? The one from Alienware for XP?

BFisch06 here is the link to the Promise 378 Drivers i actually downloaded and used for Vista x86...

http://www.station-drivers.com/telec...00.1.39-41.exe

Here is a link to the promise page

Also Toka I have the same exact issue as you... my MB revision is 5.2, I ordered it in Nov 2004 got it close to x-mas that year. It was part of the first batch. I have two friends that both ordered 7700's later from different batches so I may hijack one of theirs and load Vista on it just to see the outcome. Let me know if you find a resolution.

Thanks very very much; I'm off to give it a try right now.

np man , let me know the outcome

I actually am supposed to have MB Rev. 6.1 because I upgraded my graphics, however I never checked what Alienware actually put in. Those are the audio drivers I'm using. I have a feeling it might work if Vista would actually find an audio device. But it is not showing up in Device Manager. Also, what modem drivers are you using? I think the modem is also contributing to the problem since they are on the same bus.

Anyone know of a way to force hardware detection and instillation in windows vista?
The drivers won't work. I loaded the 32bit (that's the version of Vista I'm trying to load) and the drives came up (my externals were already displayed) and I chose Partition 2 and hit next and I got this pop up window:

Install Windows

Windows could not determine if this computer contains a valid system volume.

When you hit OK then entire installation closes.

I just tried installing from XP instead of booting and after I select the version I want to install (Ultimate) it just hangs until I end the task in task manager.

Actually mine hangs too... Just wait 10-15 min tops and it will continue... Vista has had that problem since Beta. I think I had the same problem when using RAID. I'm now using two seperate HDDs to simplify things.

So which do I need to try again and wait? DVD boot or install via XP?
