ok i need some help please. i have a sony vaio pcg-r505gl laptop and i'm trying to reformat it. it's never been reformatted before. usually, to reformat, i'd have to put the disk in and reboot the computer, but when i do this to the laptop, the system recovery disc does not boot. i then read the manual and did what it says, press F2 when the logo SONY appears and do a bunch of other stuff. i did that but the disc still didnt boot.
can anyone help me with this? i need to know how to get the laptop to run the disc or just reformat it somehow.
thanks

this is the laptop

Recently, I tried to reinstall Windows into my desktop. Like you, I couldn't get the disc to work. The problem ended up being that the system had been updated far beyond what was on the disc - the disc was outdated. Windows refused to let an older version of itself be installed.

For my machine the solution was D-ban. After the hdd was erased, the reinstall went smoothly. Would have been great if the problem that had driven me to go to all that damn trouble been fixed with the fresh install.

oooh that makes a lot of sense, but i'm still confused on the second part you said. what is D-ban?
thanks for replying

Dban is a program that erases your hdd. If you decide to use it, read all the instructions and disclaimers first - the program works. Good luck.

ok i think i might have of screwed up. i used dban, and now when i start the laptop with the system recovery disc in the cd drive, it won't start up...even if i make sure the BIOS settings are right. the laptop just turns on, displays the logo "sony", and then it says "windows os not found"... what do i do now?

Damn, nosie, I'm sorry you're having problems. All has gone smoothly when I've used Dban. Feeling guilty that I suggested something which caused you further grief, I did a bit of checking on your issue. The best I could find was this after first reading "Operating System Reinstallation Questions" (second question) here.

Never having had to use any of this info, I'm not sure about exactly what to expect, but the instructions seem fairly straight forward. Before jumping through any further hoops which may not be necessary, I'd double check the BIOS settings and boot order if you're able. Also, since my own advice seems to have failed you, you might want to wait for another poster and see if better recommendations are available.

thank you for helping me. i got a windows xp disc and installed it on the laptop now.
the laptop wont read the application disc though, i dont know why. the cd drive reads some discs, but sometimes it doesnt.
right now im looking for Jog Dial Navigation 1.0..... do you know where i can download this for the laptop? or maybe is there another similar application that would make the jog dial control work? i've been searching for it but the only one i've found is a japanese version that's upgrade. i tried that one, but it didn't work.
or do you know how i could get the cd drive to read the application recover disc?

Sorry, I've never heard of that program. All available Sony software for your machine, including instructions for installing Windows is listed here.

Tried Google for Jog Dial and couldn't find any mention of the program. Are you sure that's the proper name?

This application disc is from Sony? If it is call support and request that they overnight you a new one. It's one of two things going on here, you either have a failing CD-ROM drive, or the application disc is bad.
