Upgrading My Hard Drive - Formatting Question

Thread Starter
I'm in the process of upgrading my 40 GB hard drive to a Hitachi 160G hard drive. My question is how do I format the new Hitachi 160G hard drive if my computer doesn't even recognize it when i plug it in? I tried to clone everything from my old hard drive to the new one using Acronis, but it gave me an error on sector 2 or something like that...i'm figuring its cause the new hard drive hasn't been formatted yet....any ideas would be helpful...thanks!

Maybe a live linux CD like The Ultimate Boot CD can get it formatted. It has lots of disk utilities on it. it.

Acronis doesn't need the HDD to be formatted. If you got a bad sector error then the HDD may be defective and you should RMA it. What was the error, exactly? Can you post a screenshot?

What laptop are we talking about here? It may be that it needs a bios update to address the larger drive geometry.
