Another 9860 dies

This is my second and last Sager.
The 9860 bought April 2005 has worked flawlessly till a week ago when I powered it down to take home from the office, no hint of anything wrong, normal shut down.

Powering up 30 minutes later - NOT! pressing power button did nothing, only thing turning blue was my finger. DJ section works fine, but no computer.
Tried with and without battrey, cleared BIOS, tried my other power adapters, checked for dust/dirt - it was spotless inside and out - looks brand new, but it is a $3200 brick. Battery charging still works including LED indicators going from yellow to green when charge completed.

BTW, no burned components on MB or adapter cards.

Prepared to spend $400, I sent it back to Sager, of course it is out of waranty. Today I got the word from them - new mothreboard AND Video $999 + labor/shipping. Oh yes, and they will throw in a new power adapter (what am I supposed to do with the other 3 I have?)

In the mean time my Dell Inspiron 8000 of 6 years ago is just chugging along. 1GHz is infinetly faster then a dead 3.8GHz Sager brick

If any one knows of a class action suit against Sager, please let me know.

"By filling out the form below and then submitting it, you can report any injury or death involving consumer products to us, or report an unsafe product to us."

I would say this is more of a design fault, and a company that does not stand by its product.
Since there is no injury involved, that is would not be the place to start, but thanks for the input

The 9860 mobo should have been recalled. Sager decided to take the financial hit on loosing those repeat customers rather than doing the right thing. It's a shame because they have many machines that seem to be well made (my 9750 has done well).

ON the other hand the 9890 mobo which they'll put in there seems to be a bit more reliable.

Well, after much ado with Sager and being guaranteed I will be getting the 9890 MB and new Nvidia video card, I agreed to pay the $1000+ for repair, and now two weeks later I am told the video board is on back order... keep waiting
What a $%& disaster, lousy design, worse service, Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unit came back week and a half back, all working, but with a huge gash across the cover (it has always beeen pampered, and was in mint condition when sent out).

So it went back to Sager again, this time to have the top cover replaced, on their nickel this time.

It's back here now, working for 4 days, and looking great again. Will cross my fingers it will stay that way for a while, just no more Sagers in my future.

My sager 9860 just experienced this problem today! I press the power button, the fans turn on, the lights come on (cept for the time in the front) but no motherboard bootup. I've tried repeated times to get it to boot up but nothing. This is quite dissapointing. It's one of the first models (Dec '04) and around a year after I got it I had to send it back for a "No operating system found error". I just had to eat the $80 to ship it to them. This time without any warranty it looks like I'll be spending more.

I still love this laptop, it has always done what I needed it to, but with problems like these that prevent it from working and having to send it back and risk more problems coming out of it is unsettling.

I'm glad you got yours straightned out OldSage, let's see how my adventure turns out I guess. Hopefully good.

**Update**
After trying a few more times turning it on/off I finally got it to boot. I can only imagine this is a sign that the motherboard is going bad. Time to start backing up what data I want and be prepared for the time it wont' boot after 20+ tries.

You got lucky my girlfriend had a Sony Vaio and she needed a Motherboard and a processor 1200.00. At least the battery didn't blow up. Oh it wouldn't turn on when all the lappies were exploding.

I don't know whether everyone is expecting too much out of a Sager. They are performance machines that run hot and are at the cutting edge. My friend and I both bought a 9860 in April 2005 and they have both died in the last couple of months, his losing power to the motherboard and mine not booting after a fall from a chair (while in its padded backpack).

For me the computer was lugged back and forwards to work nearly every day and used pretty hard at times (hosting large Virtual Machines and processing, as well as the games). I can't say that I'm surprised it has died now. If you wanted something to last you 10 years, get an IBM and their worldwide coverage. OK every component will have been replaced in the 10 years, but at least it isn't at your cost.

The silver lining to my story, is that the computer was covered under home contents insurance as I had specifically listed it. Under the "new for old" policy, it is being replaced, and again fortunately, since I live in the UK, the current valuation of the dead 9860 was more than enough to get a 5760 spec'd up to the max.

Great point about IBM/Lenovo. You know, you don't always hear people spreading GOOD customer support stories. Here's one that Sager could emulate:

http://consumerist.com/consumer/warr...ovo-256506.php

"On Wednesday morning, IBM sent me a sturdy shipping box with a return DHL label. On Wednesday early evening, I packed up my baby and sent her to a company called Solectron in Memphis. I left town on Thursday (to Madison, Wisc. -- my first visit; great town), and got home by late Friday morning. There she was waiting for me, my smart little machine, all fixed up by someone halfway across the country, at a cost to me of $0.00, the entire transaction taking about 36 hours.
I wish IBM made more things so I could buy them and know that if something went wrong, the repair process would always be this good.

This is the best customer service I've ever encountered in my life."
